Virtual Box freeze the system

Post by alfa71omega » Mon Feb 19, 2018 5:49 pm

Good evening, I'm experiencing the following. installed and updated GNU/Linux Mint 18.3 Mate. Installed via Software manager Virtualbox.Try to install Win10 and Win XP. In both the cases as soon as I enter return, once selected the ISO file the system freeze. Try to wait 45 minutes but nothing happens. I had to reset the machine. No command available.
Thanks

There's another recent thread talking about this so go there for more in depth help.

Un-install Virtual box and then purge your system of any residual files...

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get autoremove
usually works.

Go here and download and install the latest version https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads Ubuntu 16.04 Its the only one that works with the 4.13 Kernel ( which you probably installed when you updated your system )

Follow Mattyboy's advice and install directly from the Virtualbox website and not from the repositories. If you want to look at the other discussion on this same matter look here:viewtopic.php?f=231&t=263920

This is one of the few times that it is recommended not to use the repositories. I have been doing it this way for four years to run XP with no issues. See the other discussion for more information. Best of luck! :-)

I had a thread on this very topic 2 or 3 weeks ago

The short answer is, you most likely installed VB from Software Manager.
and if so, that is why it locks up.... there is a bug in that version.

you have to use the software from Oracle, and I posted the links in one post, after the guys here showed me where to get them.

viewtopic.php?f=90&t=264079&p=1432339

about 2 pages long I think, took me a while to get it figured out.

One step ahead... no more freeze of the system but this is what I get when trying to install windows XP. Same message for windows 10. I tried to download other versions but the system doesn't accept them.
Please, help needed

You have residual files relating to the old package on your system, I had the exact same problem until a cleaned everything out.

Uninstall it again and then go here https://askubuntu.com/questions/703746/ ... virtualbox

Once you've removed everything re-boot and install the downloaded version again make sure you're using the version for Ubuntu 16.04 and also make sure you're using the 4.13.0-32-generic kernel.

For a very recent thread on the same subject see https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic ... 0&t=264238
I would run sudo apt-get remove --purge --autoremove virtualbox{,-\*} as suggested by @Termy to get rid of the installed VB and every other residue.
Then you could download the latest version of VB from https://download.virtualbox.org/virtual ... _amd64.deb
plus the corresponding Guest Additions from https://www.virtualbox.org/download/tes ... 120528.iso.
I suppose that's one of the ironies of life, doing the wrong thing at the right moment -C.C.
