Mint 18.3 Intel CPU Intel GPU

Brand new PC & brand new hp 24es 22" HDMI monitor which worked fine with the old PC on Mint 17.

My main problem.
Can't change display resolution from 800x600x75 result = Monitor: Unknown

I have searched the forum for many days and tried various suggestion like creating and adding new modes with cvt and xrander. I have actually managed to add the mode I want but when I try to change to it via Control Centre / Displays, I get the "Could not set the configuration for CRTC 621" error and I'm stuck on 800x600

From what I have read, I get the feeling I may have to wait for a newer kernel.

I even tried to edit /etc/default/grub file by adding i915.alpha_support=1. This got me a series of tiny dots on the top left of the screen followed by many lines of errors. Smaller characters than before so maybe the resolution changed but the machine did not boot so I put it back the way it was.

I have learned a lot but I feel I am way in over my head

What does this mean?
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default

Does it mean the PC can't figure out what the capabilities of the monitor are? eDID no good?

My monitor is connected via HDMI port and VGA port via adaptor to Display Port. The PC doesn't see the VGA or DP port at all.

Have you tried all versions of Mint since 17? Maybe you could go back to 18.2.

Maybe you could find a video card which would work in Mint 18.3, which would result in this monitor working.

please post readout from this command. Using it, I can perhaps create an .xprofile file that you can place in your user's home folder to give you what you need.
