WiFi Adpater Issues

Post by techspecx »

Hello,

Thank you for having such a fine release of Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia - the only issues I am having is the WiFi connection. I am a newbie so I thought I would post here.

The strange thing is when I stick the WiFi adapter in (MediaLink Wireless - N USB Adapter MWN-USB150N) it sees my network but it will not connect - it even shows a signal percentage of at least 93% which to me means it could connect but doesn't. It also saves the passphrase and everything looks good but it will not connect - it tries but no go. It is an auto connection once I plug in the adapters. But as I said it doesn't connect or auto connect.

I have several WiFi adapters that I tried and all would see the network but would not connect. I list them below:

Rosewill High Gain USB Adapter RNX-N150HG
TrendNet TEW648UBM

But the one I would like to have connect is the one I use within Windows 10 (I setup a dual boot since I would like to move away from Windows) and that adapter is:

TP-LINK Archer T1U | AC450 Wireless Nano USB Adapter

They have a Linux driver but as a newbie I do not know how to compile and make a file. I would if I knew how to do it right but I would rather have a PnP (Plug and Play) WiFi adapter.

Thank you in advance for your answers. Sorry for the long post.

Regards,
Robert

a. Plug all three adapters in your computer and then please generate an overview of your system like this:

- Launch a terminal window (this is how to launch a terminal window);

- make the terminal window full screen, to avoid chopped lines;

- copy/paste this command into the terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
(if you type: the letter F is a capital letter)

- Press Enter.

- Copy/paste the output in your next message.

b. Do the same with the following four commands:

Code: Select all

rfkill list all
and:

Code: Select all

inxi -Nn
and:

Code: Select all

iwconfig
and:

Code: Select all

just to confirm what your adapter type is:

Code: Select all

sudo lshw -C network
(you will be asked to enter your password for this one.)

Hello Pjotr and Pierre my new Linux friends, :)

Listed below is what you requested. I noticed that the one USB adapter does not show up and that is the TP-LINK Archer T1U | AC450 Wireless Nano USB Adapter but when I try to compile the driver I get many errors. I have contacted the supplier but I have a feeling it has something to do with the Makefile.inc file and that it is for an older version of Linux.

Code: Select all

Again some adapters see my network fine and Linux Mint even tells me that there are available networks. But when I go to connect and it tells me that it is trying to connect - it disconnects.

Thank you for your time and help.

Robert

OK, try this:

1. Set your router to a fixed channel (instead of Auto). Make sure you select the best channel:
https://sites.google.com/site/easylinux ... st-channel
(item 1, left column)

2. Apply the 12 tips for wireless security mentioned on this page, notably "AES only":
https://sites.google.com/site/easylinux ... tywireless

3. Test whether at least one of your wifi chipsets gives you a stable connection now. If so, we can proceed with the next step: making your favourite wifi chipset work as well.

The TP-Link Archer T1U does show in lsusb results as Bus 002 Device 004: ID 2357:0105
It uses the MT7610u chipset and no one has been able to get it to work correctly in newer linux kernels that I know of
You can search on github.com for T1U or mt7610u and see if someone's source code does work

The interface from the Roku box will follow the channel number of your wireless router. It can interfere with your connection, if the Roku is between your laptop and the router. Try turning the Roku off when you're attempting to connect.
(This sounds a bit snake-oily, but it's happened to me)

Hello Pjotr,

My router is on a fixed channel because we have a lot of noise in the neighborhood - everyone on the same channel so I fixed my channel to one that no one was using - this was before the Linux Mint install. And I also have all the other things that the 12 tips advise. Could there be an issue if I am using DD-WRT? I always flash my routers with DD-WRT instead of the firmware that the manufacturer supplies. Thanks for your reply!

Robert

Hey wilbobob - the Roku is actually upstairs and about 25ft west of where my router is. In fact I am right on top of my router I could hard wire a connection but I like the comfort of wi-fi.

Code: Select all
