[Solved]How to format a USB flash drive to be readable and writable

Post by Charlie » Fri Feb 23, 2018 10:45 am

Could someone PLEASE instruct me on how to make a flash drive readable and writable and mountable. Tried Gparted, won't mount, tried the USB format tool, not mountable.

To tell you the truth I had it mountable only to discover I could not write to it.

Don't give us so much information, we can hardly understand it.

Sarcasm off: We need details. What does not mountable mean? What exactly did you try? What error message or such did you receive? Did you plug out and in the drive? Did you tryy different ports? What does the Disks tool tell about the device?

I plug in the drive and it just sits there and is not mounted. Like a dead duck. I tried all of the ports. I get no error messages.

You wrote, that you formatted it at last with the usb formatting tool. This tool does not allow to create more than one partition, it formats the complete drive with the single partition. But the picture shows, that there is a mini partition and 97 % of the drive is unused. So this does not match. Try again.

If this gives the same result use gparted and create a new partition table, select the default msdos type. Than try again to create one partition, which covers the complete drive.

I think this drive must be broken or something.

You didn't do that, you formatted it to ext4. Try again and format it to fat32, which is what it'd have come with.

BTW I've re formatted USB sticks quite a few times without using gparted. Try the Disks utility that comes with Mint. It's much easier than gparted.

Okay I did it again in Gparted and guess what, it now mounts and IS writable. No idea why, I think it is broken.

It's not broken. It needed to be partitioned and formatted properly as a USB flash drive.

It was identified as "counterfeit" by Mint. No more need be said. It had been formatted numerous times in Windows and Linux. At one point it was mountable but not writable which halted my exploration into Transmission on DD-WRT as the downloads were being stopped in their tracks, a mounted drive that was unwritable wasn't high on my list, but that was the cause.
