[SOLVED] "could not load OpenGL subsystem" issue

Post by hiphip »

Hello.

Not first time I get this very error but always when installing new games which supposedly make use of advanced graphics. I've checked in forums both Mint and the game (Openarena in this case) related. I believe it has to do with XORG and possibly with server already started.

This is my Mint version with, I guess, all drivers updated:
Linux version 4.12.14-041214-generic (kernel@tangerine) (gcc version 7.2.0 (Ubuntu 7.2.0-3ubuntu1) ) #201709200843 SMP Wed Sep 20 12:46:23 UTC 2017

Graphic card in Intel integrated within my HP Pavilion DM4 laptop, and recently (few hours ago) updated through Intel Graphics Update Tool. I'd appreciate any clue. Below goes the message after calling the game from the terminal.

Keep on searching and read it could have something to do with Mesa. What's unclear is if I should have Mesa or it doesn't have to be installed. I've read both opinions. Anyway, I tried both: totally uninstalled, and reinstalled and in none of both cases did it work. Error message still the same. :-(

This is still the error message I receive "GLimp_Init() - could not load OpenGL subsystem." despite having updated (and then downgraded back) the linux kernel. So no clue from here. Anyone?

This is my Mint version with, I guess, all drivers updated:
Linux version 4.12.14-041214-generic (kernel@tangerine) (gcc version 7.2.0 (Ubuntu 7.2.0-3ubuntu1)....
...1: You should be on either the latest 4.4.x series or the latest 4.13.x series, those are the supported ones.
...and recently (few hours ago) updated through Intel Graphics Update Tool.
...2: That was what most likely broke the system - a total no-no.
Keep on searching and read it could have something to do with Mesa. What's unclear is if I should have Mesa or it doesn't have to be installed.
Of course it has to do with Mesa. And to make it clearer, of course it has to be installed. But now it's instead turned to...Mess-a.
It should only be updated via Update Manager, or, if you really know what you're doing, via following to the letter the instructions in Oibaf's ppa & the likes.

Start with a clean slate. Update your kernel to the latest 4.13.x, see if it plays well in your system (else, go to the latest 4.4.x). Then update Mesa / Xorg / linux-firmware from within Level 4 in Update Manager. Verify that all still works properly afterwards. And choose the proper driver for your card from Driver Manager obviously (if such exists).

If all ok so far, use Timeshift & make a backup of your system as a future assurance & to save you time. Lessons to be learned: do not install kernels & even more graphics' stacks/drivers outside the proper official channels. And if you ever happen to be in the 'need' to do, then make sure to have a Timeshift backup ready.

I just looked here ... https://www.cnet.com/products/hp-pavilion-dm4/specs/ ... and assuming it's the same one, it's a 2010 model.

When you're talking about a 2010 model with Intel graphics it's quite possible that your GPU doesn't support the OpenGL level required by the game(s) you're trying to run. And since you haven't yet given up any proper system info, copy/paste this to the terminal and copy/paste the text output here:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
If it IS the case that your graphics card doesn't support the required OpenGL levels, sorry, you can't update that on old Intel gpus. Hopefully it's different.

Hi Hoser. Thank you. I haven't checked the forum since.

You're right I should have posted system info. I paste it below. On the other hand I've read of older machines (or with lower GCards) running OPEN_GL properly. So I hope(d) I could too. Hope system info could show you some light on this. TIA

Thank yoy Thx.

You're right, my knowledge of Linux is pretty basic. I just use some common sense, basic programming skills and forum recipes. I'll try to follow your suggestion, even if I don't understand them well, as why 4.13 or 4.4 series must be used and not the rest. :?

I'll let know what comes up. Thank you again

And hopefully more useful information, the game error log after I followed thx instructions. Updated to latest 4.13 and updated mesa and xorg (intel). Everything looks working and ok (as it was before).

Hello, I keep on dealing with the issue. Definitely I don't have an optimized graphic card configuration. I have no sensible problems save with some games which require some more graphic resources despite they're not new and have read they're used in some laptops with similar age/quality as mine. Error logs mainly show some misconfiguration (can't access some files, can't find some packages...). Last I tried to install GDM (the game throw an error message saying couldn't find it) and got a black screen and couldn't log in back. Thank to Timeshift (ty @thx-1138) could revert it and now I'm back to previous situation.

I've already did the updates @thx-1138 suggested and everything is apparently the same. But in the Driver Manager I get:
- "Unknown. This device is using an alternative driver", arguably the Graphic Card not being recognized as such (?)
- Then only to options to choose from:
  1. Intel-microcode (open-source). Version 3.20180108.0+really20170707ubuntu16.04.1 Processor Microcode firmware for Intel CPUs
  2. Or 'Do not use this device'
So, I have no option but to leave first option on. Stuck again.

Any ideas? Ty

hiphip, the suggestions in regards to a supported kernel & against 'Intel Graphics Update Tool' were meant in order to have a properly working system.
IGUT isn't compatible with Mint: even if someone tweaks it's config to get it to install, it will still break the graphics stack eventually (xorg, mesa etc).

I don't know if the game in question is compatible with your graphics' card. A bit of googling reveals this:
  • be sure you installed your video card driver correctly
  • some current settings in OpenArena may be incompatible with your graphics card. Make a backup of the file q3config.cfg and delete it in your OpenArena folder.
Both of which are not very enlightening i would think (but maybe tweaking this q3config.cfg would do the trick, no idea).
You'd probably have more luck reading their Wiki above, or maybe asking about it in their forums...

Ty again, thx-1138

I'll follow your suggestions. They seem the closer to a solution that I've found til now. And, as you said, maybe my computer simply can't play this and some other similar games. I'll go in 2 directions
  1. check other game users opinions/common issues
  2. try to understand how to properly configure my graphic card under mint/ubuntu and learn to find out what my actual config is
I don't no why but have the feeling that I have 2 overlapped configs. Specially since I do all mechanically following forum recipes and yet don't understand how it really works here (I have some better knowledge of Windows OS).

As for the rest of escenarios I have everything working I'll try not to annoy much here or even forget about it. I'm not such a gamer, just was playing around. :-)

Ty, have a very nice week!

driver is correct but no GLX renderer loaded.

Maybe you booting with nomodeset option?

If not , update to LM 18.3 and latest Kernel (level 5 update ) and Mesa (level 4 update )

Hi Mank_in. Ty for reply.

I've updated, downgraded, uninstalled and installed quite a few things until now. I've gone throuh a couple of X failures solved in text mode and making use of Timeshift backups. At the moment I'm with latest Mint 18.3 and latest 10.xx kernel. It could be nomode but I found something else:

There are a couple of errors and warnings and not sure how to solve them. I don't know why it still trying to load 965 drivers after I uninstalled the package for 965. Maybe it is there the problem.

Code: Select all

[ 31.707] (EE) AIGLX error: dlopen of /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/i965_dri.so failed (/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/i965_dri.so: undefined symbol: _glapi_tls_Dispatch)
Was planning to open a new thread but after your reply I guess I'll stick to this one... for now. As a reminder I have to say that GLX was loading properly in a USB Live session with Mint 18.3, so now we know the hardware is strong enough to cope with it.

Any help is appreciated. Have a nice day!

look like there is something missing link for shared library in libglx
try this command for listing:

Code: Select all

ldd /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so

in my system ( using i915 ) all library link to one folder: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu

broken link :
libGL.so.1 => /usr/local/lib/libGL.so.1 (0x00007f63bf957000)
libglapi.so.0 => /usr/local/lib/libglapi.so.0 (0x00007f63be6f9000)

delete all files with name libGL.so and libglapi.so from folder /usr/local/lib/

Hi @mark_in! Look now!

Code: Select all

$ inxi -Gx
Graphics:
Card-1: Intel Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller driver: i915
  v: kernel bus ID: 00:02.0
  Display Server: x11 (X.Org 1.18.4) driver: intel
  unloaded: vesa,fbdev,modesetting resolution: 1366x768~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa DRI Intel Ironlake Mobile
version: 2.1 Mesa 18.1.0-devel direct render: Yes
BIG thank you!

For the one looking for an answer:
Well, I can't remember EVERYTHING I tried. I've done and undone, crashed and recovered (Timeshift!)... But I guess if you follow the previous steps in this thread, plus what I guess that did the trick, you may get to solve it. At least it's a good try.
  • cleaned, purged, removed any non-Intel related X packages (including Xorg-...-all ones)
  • applied @mank_in recipe/process
  • updated again including latest kernel 13 (not sure if needed)
  • installed/updated mesa and libdrm
  • rebooted (of course!)
And that's it. I've got OpenGL up (and now I can play some 'modern' games before going to sleep  :P )

Next business will be to optimize start up... but that'll be a new post.

BIG ty. Have a nice week!
