Really Slow Transfer/Copying Speeds Recently - How to Fix?

Post by mintyfreshuser »

Hi everyone.

For some reason, it's been taking me a significantly longer time to copy files, but I don't know why. In the past it never took me nearly as much time.

For example, I recently copied a 65 gigabyte drive to an external hard drive and it took literally all day. I've copied this same drive to this same external hard drive before and it took only a fraction of this much time. This external hard drive was plugged into a USB 3.0 port so it probably wasn't a port issue.

What could be causing these slow copying/transfer speeds? What can be done about it?

Is there an easy way to check for problems which may be causing slow transfer/copying speeds?

Perhaps I could run some kind of diagnostic test on a given drive to see if it's healthy? Or maybe there's a way to reset something so that files can be copied as fast as possible again. I'm not sure how to tell if it's something to do with my SSD, Linux Mint, the external hard drive, etc.).

The distro of Linux Mint that I'm using on this secondary computer is Linux 18.3 Sylvia and the desktop environment is Cinnamon 3.6.6 if that helps.

Thank you.

I had that happen to me once and it turned out to be a failing disk drive. As they fail, they keep swapping things out of bad sectors into good sectors, and that slows them down. This is just a guess, but you might run smartctl against the disk and see if you can see any failures noted. Here is an example output:

Code: Select all

# smartctl -x /dev/sda
smartctl 6.5 2016-01-24 r4214 [x86_64-linux-4.4.0-112-generic] (local build)
