Dell e6430 - sound from Firefox but not other sources ( Solved by uninstalling FireJail)

Post by Boca » Tue Feb 27, 2018 5:58 am

Yesterday, I got an error about hardware failure ( see attached screenshot)...... I, think, I selected "No".

Now, I can only get sound ( e.g Youtube) through Firefox. Using Spotify, RhythmBox etc produce no sound.

I have googled a bit and tried

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove --purge alsa-base pulseaudio && sudo apt-get install alsa-base pulseaudio && sudo alsa force-reload
but with no improvement.

Any thoughts on next steps please?

Tony

Recent versions of FF use pulseaudio only (can't skip it and use ALSA directly) ; and if it's working...check the output settings of your other software, set them to pulseaudio - they might be set to one of the things it's complaining about.
Please edit your original post title to include [SOLVED] if/when it is solved!
Your data and OS are backed up....right?
Mint 18.3 Xfce/fluxbox/pulse-less
Xubuntu 17.10/fluxbox/pulse-less

Thanks Flemur,
I cannot see anything in the settings of Spotify or RhythmBox to specify the output device.
From Mint-Menu> Sound& Accessories> Sound, I only have the option of HDA INtel PCH... which is the one which "failed"

I have also tried using a USB "soundcard" but can get no sound from that either; even though it appears to change/mute the volume on screen.

Within Menu>Sound&Accessoires> Sound, my selection of the USB is not "sticky"; when i close and reopen Sound , it has defaulted back to the HDA INtel PCH

Hi,

I tried Pjotr's suggestion from this thread viewtopic.php?f=90&t=265442&p=1441780&h ... l#p1441780 but it didn't work for me.

I completely installed FireJail and the sound is now restored.
