Dell 4k 32" and XPS 15" scaling problems

Post by mclarenservices » Fri Mar 02, 2018 6:46 pm

I thought this would be simple BUT after reading copious amounts of peoples experience I'm left 'dazed and confused'!

Q. How do I setup up both displays to the same resolution but with the 'Laptop' display having a different scale (HiDPI) to the 4k one?

Specs are: Dell XPS 15 4k (internal Nvidia 960) connected via Dell Dock to a 32" 4K Monitor.

Code: Select all

 xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 7680 x 2160, maximum 16384 x 16384
eDP-1-1 connected 3840x2160+3840+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 346mm x 194mm
   3840x2160 60.00*+
   2048x1536 60.00
   .....
   400x300 60.32 56.34
   320x240 60.05
DP-1-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
HDMI-1-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DP-1-2 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
HDMI-1-2 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DP-1-1-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DP-1-1-2 connected primary 3840x2160+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 698mm x 393mm
   3840x2160 60.00*+ 29.98
   2560x1440 59.95
   .....
   720x400 70.08
DP-1-1-3 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
The Nvidia configuration just reports as two PRIME displays which doesn't help...(see pic)

If I understand you correctly, you want to make the laptop display automatically switch to HiDPI when not connected to the dock? Or are you asking for the opposite?

I basically want the laptop screen to scale larger as I use it as my secondary display. I played with the command xandr and got a little confused with the techie stuff regarding the total area, scale etc...

If it's easier, I basically want a 15" display to scale upto a 32".

OR

Ultimately I want to scale APPS individually so I can benefit from huge resolution for video editing but then easy on the eyes for office tasks like email and web design.

:D

The short answer is that you are out of luck. X11 does not support mixed scaling of monitors. It's one of the supposed benefits of Wayland but I'm not sure if any current Desktop environment actually supports it. Also Wayland is currently a no go with the Nvidia driver. So....
When I give opinions, they are my own. Not necessarily those of any other Linux Mint developer or the Linux Mint project as a whole.

Thanks Jo, I'm using the Mozilla platform scaling for now so limiting the use of the secondary laptop screen for browser and email.
