Fonts look terrible since update.

That's really all there is to it, text just looks terrible after doing updates recently. Any help is appreciated.

Hello, TheBrokenWorld.

You seem to have forgotten to provide the 2 most basic pieces of information needed to give a meaningful answer to your question:

Please, provide the complete screen output of the terminal command

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
Please, provide the list of software packages which were updated before the fonts changed their look.

Thank you.

The relevant logfile is /var/log/dpkg.log. - The previous version of dpkg.log is named dpkg.log.1.
It is a pure text file.
Each line begins with day and time. This should make it easy to identify the lines of the day when the updates were installed after which the fonts began to look dithered.

Re: Fonts look terrible since update.

Hi, TheBrokenWorld.

The list is only so long and confusing because dpkg logs every single step which it performs. The list of updated software packages was not so long after all.
There is no package which I would suspect to change how fonts are displayed. But maybe the gnome-themes-standard update made your system change a setting related to fonts rendering.

On Cinnamon the settings which I have in mind may be located in a slightly different location. Here on the xfce desktop the font settings are available this way:
System Settings > Appearance > Fonts
In the Fonts dialogue there are 2 settings which will impact how your fonts are rendered:
  • [X] Enable anti-aliasing
  • Hinting: Slight
Possible values: None, slight, medium, full
I have given the settings which work right for me. You should check yours and experiment which combination yields the best result to your eyes.

Regards,
Karl

I had tried playing around with the font settings before posting, nothing helped, I did find the solution though, and it's baffling me. I was trying to remember anything I had done recently which might affect my computer's display, and then I remembered that I had changed a setting on the monitor recently (I thought it purely affected the way colors were displayed). As far as I can tell, there was no change in resolution, but everything appeared as though the monitor wasn't operating in its native resolution. Very bizarre, sorry about this and thanks for the help.

So, it's not just the monitor, there is definitely a difference in the font style. If the updates did change the font, that's really annoying.
