Most of the freezes I have encountered with Mint is due to NVIDIA looks like you are using the nouveau drivers try using your driver manager and update your NVIDIA with their drivers

Bugga! I thought they'd resolved that! 'Tis the reason I gave up on Linux a couple of years back. I thought they'd fixed it because my system did not chuck a wobbly with my setup this time. That said I have suffered a couple of random freezes, so will need to investigate further.
Thanks for the info, BTW.

Just want to say, this problem happens for me too.
Linux Mint 18.3, Cinnamon edition, on Lenovo Thinkpad X220 64-bit laptop.
Both the recent 4.13 kernels offered through Update Manager (4.13.0-38 and 4.13.0-37) caused this problem. The system freezes during wakeup from hibernate, at the point where the saved system is being restored. My system has 3 LEDS: Wifi, Bluetooth and disk; during the freeze, only the Bluetooth LED is lit.

Reverting to the release kernel, 4.10.0-38-generic (x86_64), fixed this.

18.3 Cinnamon is a disaster for Hibernate, Suspend, and Sleep.

I have to turn them all OFF and the Lid Close to 'nothing'

Ok, thanks for that. I had been running 18.1 for at least a year with no problems. So I decided to upgrade to 18.3.....

It all worked fine for a while until I was in the lounge and on battery. Usually my craptop runs on its psu. So I shut the lid to hibernate for whatever the reason was, and since then I have had a couple of freezes during login. After a successful sign-in the screen just sits there with a dark grey background, a mouse pointer that doesn't move, and nothing happens. Recovery is by a forced power-down and the reboot has so far worked Ok.

It seems to have settled again, so I will switch everything to power-down instead of hibernate. :(

Yes,

after two lock ups like that, and a forced Power Off, the OS was corrupted so bad I had to do a new install.

Make backup of your hard drive with Clonezilla so you can at least restore it to where it was.
Mine crashed before I had the backup made.
