(Solved) http://www.openprinting.org/download/printdriver/

Post by miknun »

Hello
I am very new to Linux Mint. I have been using Windows for some years and have been using open source products on windows for many years. However I am not used to using the terminal and the appropriate commands.
I have installed Linux mint Sylvia and I was very happy with it.
I wanted to install Open Office as I have been using it for many years. I discovered that it is blocked by LibreOffice so I removed LibreOffice and then had trouble installing Open Office. So eventually thought I could re-install LibreOffice, as I do desperately need an office program.
Unfortunately after re-installing the LibreOffice Logo comes up on screen then disappears and nothing happens, on investigating I get a reoccurring error

I am afraid I am now stuck.
I would appreciate some advise.

you said "it is blocked by LibreOffice"

If I understand that statement correctly, what you really mean is that when you double click on a document, LibreOffice opens up instead of OpenOffice?

If that be the problem, find a document, right click on it, go to Properties, and select the Default program to open when you click on that type of document.

that is how I manage my stuff here, I have multiple office type programs also.

Thank you AZgl1500
I have deleted Open Office, I am now struggling to re-install LibreOffice. I thought I had succeeded but it fails to open completely and I don't know why. Except I keep getting up the message:

I have looked on a similar problem that someone has posted, with a reply saying open software sources > PPAs and deleted the ppa but I do not have anything in the PPA section to delete.

Try this:
At first quit LO completely, inclusive the quick starter.
Now open the file manager and make hidden files visible (ctrl-h).
In your home open the folder .config and rename the sub-folder libreoffice to libreoffice.bck.
Start LO.

I am afraid I am not sure that I am following your instructions. I can't find the equivalent of task manager to find programmes running to close LO. I have opened what I think is file manager and turned on hidden files But I can't any config. file. I have found a main folder, it seems to be en-GB > DEBS > filed with openoffice files which I thought I had got rid of. There are 40 odd files in that folder. I have checked the synaptic manager but I can't find any to delete.
But I can't find a folder with any libreoffice files. Yet the applications say I have got them. I am confused.
No I have found a file in the Downloads > DEBS > with 41 files in some libreoffice and some libobasis

There is the problem, that we do not know anything about your system:
What is your version of Mint and what is the desktop environment? Which kernel and which architecture? If you don't know open a terminal and enter:

Code: Select all

inxi -Sz
Paste the output here.

You need to give this information for every help request in every thread.
Do not forget this in the future.

I did not say to use a task manager. You have to quit the all open windows of LO and have to ensure, that the quick starter is also closed. If the quick starter shows in the panel you can click it and find the command to close it at the bottom of the pop up menu.

If you open a file manager window you are automatically in your home. Here you should see a folder(!) named .config (note the leading dot). If you don't see it, you have not yet made the hidden files visible; press ctrl-h again. There and only there is the place, where the sub-folder(!) (not a file) has to get renamed.

System: Host: mike-Inspiron-580 Kernel: 4.13.0-32-generic i686 (32 bit)
Desktop: MATE 1.18.0 Distro: Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia
I followed your instructions have returned the following information. I am very gui based unfortunately but when I have the machine working as I would like I will start reading about the use of the terminal.

I Followed your original instructions, found the config file renamed went back an open libreoffice but just the same. The opening image begins then disappears, but the program doesn't open.
I went back and checked that the config file has rebuilt itself.
Thank you for your patience with me and my problem. I am wondering if I should remove all of the libreoffice and re-install.
If you think that is best perhaps you wouldn't mind telling me the best way to do it.

We can some more investigation at first.

Create a fresh new user account and log in there. How does it behave there?

I have tried the Guest log in and created a new login. Both react in exactly the same way as my normal login area.
The Banner icon appears, after a few seconds disappears and then nothing.

So we know, that the culprit is in the system itself. You can try to remove all, what you have added with the OOo installation and reinstall LO. Good luck.

After using a variety of tools
I think I have completely removed Libre Office and have re-installed it.
It actually works!
So I would like to thank you all for your help.
