Unable to set up Virtualbox

Mint 18.3 - 64 bit. (Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia \n \l) (/home/owner/Downloads/virtualbox-5.2_5.2.8-121009~Ubuntu~xenial_amd64.deb) When I double clicked on the download it seemed to be installing but froze at this point.

The "install package" icon stayed grey. I am a complete Noob with Linux.

Unluckily the message on the red bar is only partially readable. What does it say completely?

Shot in the dark: Is there another version of VB installed on the system?

Updated your kernel recently due to Meltdown and Spectre? If so, you need the latest Vbox, maybe only available from a PPA.

You need to uninstall the old version...then install the new one...good idea to backup any VMs you have first.

Or use the 4.4 range.

You need to purge the old version first.

sudo apt remove --purge virtualbox*

should get rid of it.

Then go to https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads

and pick the package most suited for your cpu.

for intel, choose the AMD, not i386

do follow what AZgl1500 has said,
and purge / remove the existing VB files, then download the VB setup direct from the Oracle site:
https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads
you should be able to use either the "Xenial" or the "Zesty" version of VirtualBox.

maybe download both, and check which will work better, on your hardware.

Wrong advice. Which of the 2 variants you use has nothing to do with the manufacturer of the CPU, but only with the architecture of the host. The OP has a 64 bit system, so only amd64 will work.

do explore the option of Exporting those VBs onto your backup media . .
- great for when, you inevitably mees up some VBs.
