[SOLVED] LM 17.3, kernel down-/upgrade, screen resolution low etc.

Post by Gorgar »

Dear community,

i have been using LM 17.3 KDE 64bit with kernel 3.19.0-32 so far.

After downgrading to kernel 3.13.0-143 the maximum screen resolution was 1024x768 with nvidia-304 (recommended).
Same after upgrading to kernel 4.4.0-116.

I changed to xserver-xorg-video-nouveau, version 1:1.0.10-1ubuntu2 with kernel 4.4.0-116.
This brought back max. resolution of 1920x1080, but now the fonts look slightly different, psensor "dropped" from v1.1.5 to 1.1.2 and changed the fancontrol settings (which will lead to an upcoming post), tor wasn't starting for a few attempts...maybe more.

Do you have any advice, which LTS kernel (ideally Meltdown&Spectre-safe) brings back the old look and feel?

linux-image-4.4.0-108-generic is a good option.

Not good advice - it's only listed in the blog post as it was the patched kernel at the time the blog post was written. It was very rapidly replaced by 4.4.0-109.132 as it proved to be quite buggy....http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs ... /changelog
For custom Nemo actions, useful scripts for the Cinnamon desktop, and Cinnamox themes visit my Github pages.

And this came out a couple of days later.

All of the kernel updates since 108 have been additional Spectre/Meltdown patches or fixes for issues created by the prior spectre/meltdown patches http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs ... /changelog
