[SOLVED] How to burn photos to CD?

Post by sdcougar » Wed Mar 21, 2018 4:45 am

Mint xfc 17
Thinkpad T60
(ignore info on line at bottom; I am overseas on a different computer)

I tried the xfburn , help link was bad., Installed K3b, and help book does not work without kde

Cannot figure out how to make either one of them work to copy photo files on this computer to a CD.

It should be a simple as copying or draging the file you want to burn to xfburn or k3b.
I use xfburn all the time. just start a new data disc. and copy the files you want to burn.

What is happening when you try that?

In K3b you need to select at first to create a data project. Now you can work similarly as with a file manager.

I open xfburn. Click on New Data Compositoin button. Gives me me page with "+ Add" button in top, left corner.
Click on that and it gives me a new window "File(s) to add to composition"
I find the file and click on it. Opens. Shows the photos(thumb and size list). There is an "add" button on the Right, bottom of that page.
When I click on that 'add' button it closes that window and closes the xfburn window

that's strange, mine works fine here just have to double click the image file and it add it to the list and burns just fine.

Since it's happening in k3b also I would suspect something in Nemo. You might give thunar or dolphin a try and see if you get similar results.
may be some one else will have a better solution.
Does k3b crash the say way?

what type of image files are they?

Hi sd cougar
I find the file and click on it. Opens. Shows the photos(thumb and size list). There is an "add" button on the Right, bottom of that page.
When I click on that 'add' button it closes that window and closes the xfburn window
Are you missing a step there? When you get as far as opening the folder containing the images you want to add to the burn list, you need to select some or all before clicking on the 'add' button.

Regards
Bob

Hi sdcougar,

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

I assume you installed the 3rd party multimedia packages during the installation of Linux Mint Xfce? If not, install "mint-meta-codecs", and I would also install "ubuntu-restricted-extras".

+1 for installing and using "K3b" which IMHO is the best Linux DVD/CD application. If you are using Cinnamon, Mate, or Xfce, then I recommend installing "kde-runtime" package as well. I also recommend going into the "Synaptic Package Manager (SPM)" searching for "K3b", right-clicking it and installing all the recommended and suggested packages.

Why do you want to use a CD disc versus a DVD disc? As was already stated, normally you would select a "Data" project and add whatever files you want like pictures to the project disc, then select "burn".

The K3b Handbook - online
K3b - KDE UserBase Wiki

K3b user manual PDF format
https://docs.kde.org/trunk5/en/kdemulti ... 3b/k3b.pdf

K3b - Community Help Wiki
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/K3b

There are also some really great applications for making DVD discs that play in regular home or business DVD or Blu-ray players, like "Bombono", "DeVeDe", "DVD styler", etc... Some video editors can also create the DVD's like the superb "Kdenlive", etc...

You can also create a video file of pictures called a "slideshow" using various movie maker and slideshow applications like "ffDiaporama", "Imagination", various slideshow movie maker browser add-ons, etc... Most video editors like Kdenlive, openshot, etc... can easily do this too, and then add the video file to your "data" CD/DVD disc or create a regular DVD disc using the aforementioned applications.

Hope this helps ...

I would not recommend installing another desktop environment's file manager next to the existing one. That can cause problems in some cases.

Thank you to everyone for the suggestions. Finally figured out K3b, how to get the files there by dragging and was able to burn a CD

Not sure about the issue of codecs whether I have them.
