[SOLVED] Problems after update

Post by bonito »

Today I updated my linux-mint (not the kernel).
I rebooted the system and after login the first problems arose:

I got a dialog that the info-line could not sucessfully be started.
Additionally I saw that the update manager is not visible at the right bottom.
It is not possible to start the update-manager - just nothing happens.

The same for firefox and other (updated?) applications.

At least samba, X11 etc. are working .. but I want my linux-mint back, if possbile without a complete reinstall.
I am using that system for some years, this is the first time linux-mint behaves like a windows-system ;)

Any ideas how I can repair my system?

For me those symptoms sounds that update-process is interrupted, so you could run

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get -f install
PS. Update history can find from /var/log/apt/history.log, so "the guilty" can be trace from there.

A hunch - updates to virtualbox related packages today appear to be causing widespread issues with different symptoms for different desktops. Try sudo apt remove virtualbox-guest* or if that doesn't work sudo apt remove virtualbox*. You may need a reboot after removing the problem packages.

See viewtopic.php?f=47&t=266431
For custom Nemo actions, useful scripts for the Cinnamon desktop, and Cinnamox themes visit my Github pages.

My symptoms were similar to the OP and removing virtualbox-guest fixed it.

In my case after logging in the message was something about indicator plug-in not starting. I had no update manager icon and could not start it from the menu either, nothing happened when clicked on chrome, etc.
