Alright, just before I do it and mess up something REALLY important, I want to show you how that part looks and what I'm going to write. Correct me if I'm messing up something:

linux /boot/vmlinuz-4.10.0-38-generic root=UUID=cb3eb59a-2177-463c-b456-4179da16c70b ro recovery nomodeset

linux /boot/vmlinuz-4.10.0-38-generic root=UUID=cb3eb59a-2177-463c-b456-4179da16c70b ro debug=vt break=premount

I didn't want the recovery line - I wanted the normal boot line.

Paste back grep vmlinuz /boot/grub/grub.cfg

The problem is that I'm writing the code from a terminal IN recovery mode (you know, the one I've been using to access the desktop). So that's the only info that is, technically, the "normal boot line". Should I try to paste the same code in some other way, in a terminal during boot or something like that?

Here, this is the whole file, in case you need to check it:

This is the one I want you to edit - right below export linux_gfx_mode, the first menuentry selection

Code: Select all

export linux_gfx_mode

Then choose that entry (it should be the default) when you reboot. It will stop in the built in shell (ash)

Then follow what I posted with running fsck.

Then boot normally - it will stop in the ash shell so when it does enter fsck -fyv /deb/sdb1
Alright, I'm in the built-in shell (I'm using my smartphone now). This is what happens when I write the code:

Code: Select all

(initramfs) fsck -fyv /deb/sdb1
fsck from unit-linux 2.27.1
fsck: error 2 (No such file or directory) while executing fsck.ext2 for /deb/sdb

Sorry, my mistake - it should be fsck -fyv /dev/sdb1

so change deb to dev

Sorry, still no luck. Could you recommend me a way to post photos in the forum. It would be easier than writing everything or posting a video. Some things seemed off.

You can use https://ctrlq.org/images/ for images.

Question - did you setup auto login or did you choose a user and enter your password on each boot :?:

Auto login. It would be a pain to write user and password each time I turn on the PC aS I don't have anything to hide. :P

I agree it's a pain.

The last thing I can think of is there's something in your home that might be causing this.

Boot the recovery and in the terminal adduser hamster or whatever name you want and just enter a simple password and enter for the rest of the prompts.

Then open Login Window from the menu and in the user tab change the automatic login to hamster or whatever name you decided on then reboot normally.

You might have to reboot before the new user appears in the login dialog...

Ok, I'll try that. But before I wanted to show you something (the picture is taking forever to upload). When I wrote fsck -fyv /deb/sdb1 and waited for your reply, this appeared after a while:

Code: Select all

(initramfs) [ 546.718443] clocksource: timekeeping watchdog on CPU0: Making clocksource 'tsc' as unstable because the skew is too large:
tsc: Marking TSC unstable due to clocksource watchdog
TSC found unstable after boot, most likely due to broken BIOS. Use 'tsc=unstable'.

I would ignore that for now as it's not causing your boot problem.

Lets not fix every other problem on a broken system :?

By the way, how do I change the automatic login? I don't seem to have that Option in "Users & Groups" from the "Control Panel".

I don't have Cinnamon, I'm using Mate - look for Login Window from the menu.

I hope yours is similar - you set it before

I guess, it's just difficult to find something which has its name in Spanish rather than English. I should try to change the language to make it easier on me.

I wouldn't do too much with this installation as I envision a new install in your future

EDIT: You can try gksudo dbus-launch /usr/lib/lightdm-settings/lightdm-settings&

I can't believe that I got it in front of my nose the login Window all the time, but it was so WRONGLY translated that I couldn't find it... *sigh* Ok, it doesn't matter. I'll do what you told me and then I'll write that code in the terminal. Just give me a minute or two to see where this leds me.

EDIT: Nothing... I managed to boot in recovery mode with the new user account, but not in normal boot mode. This is becoming tiresome. I'm sorry for all the trouble. And I'm really grateful for all you're doing... I mean it.

Well, it does indicate that the problem is system wide and not a user account.

Does grep -i amd /etc/modprobe.d/* return anything beyond

Code: Select all

[bill@XPS] ~ $ grep -i amd /etc/modprobe.d/*
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf:# EDAC driver for amd76x clashes with the agp driver preventing the aperture
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf:blacklist amd76x_edac
[bill@XPS] ~ $
