[SOLVED] Mint Freezes with no Keyboard/Mouse response

Hey all. I just recently built a new computer and installed Cinnamon 18.3 on it. I have been using this for about 6 months on an old laptop with no issue, but on the new PC I am getting freezes.

Typically a freeze will happen within a couple hours of startup. It seems that it must be happening with certain clicks or events because I have yet to come back to it frozen after sitting. It is usually while I am using it.

I've found a few unresolved threads, and some out of date info for earlier versions, but as yet am not really clear on what is causing it. Unfortunately I have not been able to get to a terminal through any key combinations since the keyboard it frozen out (num and caps lock lights are unresponsive and stay as they were at the freeze).

Here is my setup:

The Ryzen idle freeze problem has a solution. Update your BIOS to current. Look for a new BIOS setting "PSU Idle Control" and change it to "Typical Current Idle". Note, this option was added by AMD around the late January - early February timeframe with the new AGESA code for Raven Ridge.

Prior to this fix, the solution had various workarounds including disable of C6 State or Global C-States in BIOS. I've been working with this fix on my board for past several weeks without a freeze (see my sig for my specs).

Edit: Here's the discussion thread at bugzilla on the idle freeze.

Unfortunately this hasn't corrected the issue. In my case the freezes happen at random, usually some amount of time after startup. By that I mean the computer can be used for a while, but at some point from 15 minutes to several hours there will be a complete freeze requiring a hard restart. It seems completely independent of whether it is being used or idle, or in what way it is being used (browsers, games, terminal, or random user applications).

I figured I would give an update and also bump the thread to see if anyone else has any suggestions.

Is your browser open during the freezes? In my case certain sites would choke my browser which in turn choked Mint.

It has been open in many but not all cases. I have also used both Firefox and Chrome with the same results. It really does just seem to be a random occurrence. The thing that seems to kill it the quickest is any game related to Steam, but I have heard that Mint sometimes has issues with steam, so I am not sure if that is helpful.

One thing I have noticed in the last day or so is that if there is streaming media (Youtube in particular) the audio will continue playing even after the keyboard/mouse/video have frozen.

Does Driver Manager offer anything worth trying (thinking graphics here?) Also, a newer kernel wouldn't be a bad idea. The latest 4.13 or even 4.15.0-15.

Good suggestion. It seems I was using the open source version, but not the recommended version. Changed over to Nvidia's driver and we'll see what happens. *fingers crossed*

I'll be sure to update with the results.

I have had the computer running for about three days now, and have used many different applications in that time with no issue. Seems MrEen's suggestion did the trick. :)

I have had the same issue. I found a workaround. i unplugged my mouse and keyboard and plugged both of them into two other usb ports. that solved it.
