Macbook Retina Iris Pro mid-2015 black screen after boot

Post by matthekc » Tue Apr 10, 2018 10:01 pm

I have a 2015 Macbook Retina Iris Pro running Mint and it works okay, but I have had a few small issues. For example the webcam still doesn't work but there are some people working on a driver.

The biggest problem I am having right now is a black screen after boot if the machine runs completely out of battery. This only happens if I leave the machine unplugged and it powers off. I get a dark mint splash screen and then nothing but a black screen. Last time this happened I had made a backup with Timeshift and tried restoring and I used the Ubuntu disk to try to do a grub repair but neither solved my problem, so I did a fresh install and hoped it would not happen again. The thing that is really bothering me about this is the machine was set to shut down when the battery gets low, but clearly it is not doing that properly.

Are there any config files where a setting might need changed or logs that might give me more insight into what is happening?

I got it back... I went into gparted getting ready to try some things when I noticed there was a partition called linux-suspend instead of one for swap. I deleted it and after a boot that took longer than usual the system came back up fine. I checked power manager the system is only set to shut down when battery is critically low it should never suspend  I think I found a bug anyone know any workarounds for this...

Maybe the machine didnt suspend but hibernate. It's indeed very frequent that hibernate doesnt work and prevents you from rebooting. I have found however that if you boot to something else (eg a live USB), the shutdown and make a normal reboot you should be fine, because booting to the live USB would use the disk swap and thus delete the traces of hibernation from the disk.

You could disable hibernate. And if that's not enough, disable suspend too.
