how to shut down a process

Post by cybervigilante » Thu Apr 19, 2018 4:12 pm

I started some music by clicking on it to start Rhythmbox but there seemed no way to shut it down until the music was over. Is there a graphical way to shut down processes like in Windows? If not, is there a terminal command to do that?

Graphical: Open the system monitor -> processes -> select the process and click to kill it.
Command line: enter xkill and click at the window, which you want to kill.

Since you know the name of the process you can also terminate in the terminal:

Code: Select all

killall rhythmbox

My solution is a bit simpler.

Alt-F4 and down she goes.

I like the xkill method in this thread, just so I can use the skull-and-crossbones. :D

This thread has the funny cartoon that is now missing from the above thread.

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they ain't.

That doesn't sound right.
Do you see a window? And clicking the "X" (close window) button didn't work?
Rt-click the rhythmbox toolbar icon-> close didn't work?

Your data and OS are backed up....right?

This is again a case, where we miss the basic system specs:
What is your version of Mint and what is the desktop environment? Which kernel and which architecture? If you don't know open a terminal and enter:

Code: Select all

inxi -Szxx
Paste the output here.

You need to give this information for every help request in every thread.
Do not forget this in the future.

Possibly Rhythmbox is integrated in Cinnamon in the sound applet an needs to get closed by the applet. (I don't use Rhythmbox, so I cannot tell for sure.)
