hybrid drives laptop do they work?

Post by winoseti »

I updated my 5400rpm 750GWD hdd drive to a hybrid drive seagate ST1000LX015-1U7172 7200rpm(8Gig nand(ssd)) and 1TB. I got an hour extra battery time on my laptop now. The old clunker used to hunt around now the 8Gig nand does the lions work with rapid short reads from the 7200 rpm.drive
I can confirm that hybrid drives work outta box but wow the increase in perform is phenom. launching Chrome used to take 10 seconds now less than 0.25 secs.
Forget the expensive SSDs. bang for buck the hybrids have it all over.[SOLVED]

Your hybrid drive won't be anywhere near as fast as my 3GB/s write, 3.2GB/s read SSD. Watch your hybrid gag and choke on a huge copy.

golly gee you are so write .......3Gs what gravity! how catty!
mightyfine brettio # sudo hdparm -Tt /dev/sda/dev/sda:
Timing cached reads: 9296 MB in 2.00 seconds = 4656.63 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 4 MB in 3.22 seconds = 1.24 MB/sec................the nand does the work so buffering doesnt have to be high
mightyfine brettio # sync; dd if=/dev/zero of=tempfile bs=1M count=1024
1024+0 records in
1024+0 records out
1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB, 1.0 GiB) copied, 6.42462 s, 167 MB/s

if I had wanted to I could have got 32gig of nand. but really did not want spend the extra.$ as I just wanted Chromium to load in 0.25 seconds.
guess you are a gamer or CAD designer. me not.
1TBsdhdd drive 95$ 5 year guarantee versus 1TB ssd 550$ 2 year guarantee and ssds bugbear is lost sectors. my architect friends use ssd for process saving and hdds for longterm storage. I need long term stable storage not short term fast storage.

but the relevant thing is that it worked outta box no drivers to download.

Your free clues.

Code: Select all

/dev/nvme0n1:
 Timing cached reads: 23080 MB in 2.00 seconds = 11557.09 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 7846 MB in 3.00 seconds = 2615.11 MB/sec

You have no idea what was paid for the device I have. Besides, your device is a mere cache that can only fill up at the speed of the HDD. It won't last all that long.
