How to install LibreOffice 6.0? [SOLVED]

Post by Hare Krishna »

Dear friends, I’d like to install Libre Office 6.0.x on my LinuxMint 18. Gnome OS.
I have found the web page that explains how to do it.
http://libre-software.net/how-to-instal ... inux-mint/
However, being a beginner, I do not understand step 3 of 3. Please explain to me step–by -step how to do the following commands:

Open a terminal.
I don’t understand the following step. How to do it?

Change the current directory to the location of the .deb packages:
cd ~/Downloads/LibreOffice_6.0.x_Linux_x86-64_deb/DEBS

… And this one. How? Where are these packages?

Finally, install all .deb packages:
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

In case you’re installing language packs, repeat the cd and dpkg steps for each language pack.

Where can I find language pack for Croatian? And what exactly should I do?
Thank you for helping me.

For a quite straight forward way of doing it, see:
https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2018/02/ins ... -on-ubuntu

Marziano's method is easier and it'll also keep LibreOffice updated with the normal tools (apt-get, mintinstall, synaptic, etc) like other packages.
Please edit your original post title to include [SOLVED] if/when it is solved!
Your data and OS are backed up....right?

Just to say that the margin settings in version 6 are again idiotic.
Why? Version 5 was elegant...

I agree that installing the PPA seems to work better on Mint / Ubuntu, but my recollection is that unless the old version is purged you end up with two installs. The full sequence I've used is:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove libreoffice-core
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libreoffice
Once installed, the relevant Offline Help package needs separate installation - I use Symantec PM but likely also listed in the Mint Software Manager, and is always available at the LibreOffice website:

https://www.libreoffice.org/download/download/

Tip: LO runs noticeably faster if "Java Options" is UNchecked in Tools / Options / LibreOffice / Advanced, Java (JRE) is apparently required for Templates and the "Base" database module, but I've never noticed any issue otherwise using Writer, Calc, or Impress.
TRUST BUT VERIFY any advice from anybody, including me. Mint/Ubuntu user since 10.04 LTS. LM20 64 bit XFCE (Dell 1520). Dual boot LM20 XFCE / Win7 (Lenovo desktop and Acer netbook). Testing LM21.1 Cinnamon and XFCE Live for new Lenovo desktop.

I just did this, and IMO, the improvement in speed is 10 fold.

It will take a bit of going thru the options to get my Defaults reset, but I am pleased.

Dear Marziano and others, thank you for the fantastic (the best) way to have LO 6.0. installed. Indeed, it was simpler than what I expected, just suited for us beginners.
The problem is SOLVED :D

I bought a secondhand Samsung x420, pre-loaded with Linux Mint - I'm trying to install LO - I followed the instructions at https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2018/02/ins ... -on-ubuntu

This is the message it returned:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies.
libreoffice : Depends: libreoffice-core (= 1:5.1.2-0ubuntu1) but 1:5.1.6~rc2-0ubuntu1~xenial2 is to be installed
Depends: libreoffice-report-builder-bin but it is not going to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

Any advice on what I should do now will be greatly appreciated :)

Georgian I would recommend you start a new thread.
Please do not use animated GIFs in avatars because many of us find them distracting and obnoxious. Thank you.
