When I log off and click on shutdown, it go's to user logo screen it wont turn off from their either. The only way to turn it off is to hold power button down and do a crash stop. Thanks if you can help.

hold down Alt-PrintScreen ( SysRequest )

now type slowly R E I S U O

that will power down

R E I S U B
will reboot the PC

Ctl-Alt-Backspace will reboot the Desktop and maybe let you shutdown properly

IF,

you can open Terminal, Ctl-Alt-T

just type in shutdown 0 and the PC will shut down NOW

I keep the Panel viewable at all times, the Mouse will normally always work when the DE is locked up,
I keep Terminal tabbed into Panel, that way I can mouse to Terminal and issue the 'shutdown 0' command

Try changing a MDM login theme.

Code: Select all

gksu /usr/sbin/mdmsetup

I just tried to do that, but Terminal came back to the command line, with no results at all.

Mint 18.3 uses Lightdm, not MDM.

I'm also having the exact same problem - seemed to start last week, so maybe related to a software update? Before then it was fine.
Yesterday I had to bomb it out (holding power button - not ideal).

I'm running 18.3 with Cinnamon, and - according to apt-get - I'm bang up to date on all my updates, including last weeks' kernel update.

If you are not using Timeshift , you are doing yourself a huge disservice.

Make it a habit, nay, a RULE, that you never, ever, install new things, nor do you let Upgrade Manager install new stuff,

UNTIL AFTER TIMESHIFT HAS RUN FIRST

Then, once that is done, run Timeshift again once you have proven that the system is solid, then label that Timeshift with a note "installed kernel -41"

I do this w/o fail, and it has saved my bacon more times than I can count.

Ref: Timeshift,
My thread viewtopic.php?t=263360

and here viewtopic.php?t=267996

and here is the Proof that you need to be using Timeshift, this is my thread about a bad kernel upgrade that really went sideways, the PC would not boot, and how I fixed it.

[Thanks AZgl1500. I checked out your links its a good argument for Timeshift, but its a little over my pay grade for now, in the future for sure. I can shutdown from the desktop but not from welcome screen]
