SOLVED Desktop freezing - graphics errors

Post by lisapisa2 » Mon May 21, 2018 3:05 pm

THis problem started with the 18,3 release. What happens is that from time to time the system just freezes. The mouse stays active but the keyboard does not respond to input and although the mouse pointer moves you cant do anything with the buttons. Lately my son has started to use the machine on his own account and I often have the two of us logged in and this seems to have increaed the rate of these system freezes. I did see this error in the system log today

May 21 11:44:04 mantissa kernel: [18025.712971] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: fifo: SCHED_ERROR 0a [CTXSW_TIMEOUT]
May 21 11:44:04 mantissa kernel: [18025.712981] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: fifo: gr engine fault on channel 5, recovering...

Any help here is appreciated. I am running 18.3 Mate,.

Did you notice the third line down?... "Distro: /etc/ corrupted, use -% to override" ...this would normally have the name of the distribution, ie linux mint, ...the OS itself appears to be corrupted...did you check the "checksum" that is did you verify that the download to your USB stick was showing no errors before installing it to your computer?...DAMIEN

You have a Nvidia graphics card and you need to go to Driver Manager and install the recommended Nvidia driver for that card, that should take care of the graphics errors and maybe the freezes as well. Also as DAMIEN1307 posted something did not install properly and it may have been a corrupted downloaded .Iso or the burn was not good.
Double check that it may be that you would be better off reinstalling the system. If you do reinstall please follow the instruction on the release notes concerning freezes found here:

I solved the problem. The error message about the version was ared herring. It was indeed the Nvidia graphics driver that was causing the problem. I updated to the suggested driver and the freezing has stopped. Iwaited a few days to make sure but by now I should have had many failures and instead I have had zero. Thank you to all that helped.
