How to run Excel with VBA Macros

Post by zbo22 »

Hello

I use an excel spreadsheet with lots of Macros. I would like to use it on my Linux machine somehow. It doesn't seem like the online office 365 products support sheets with macros. Any suggestions?

I can;t find any way to do this in any native Linux apps. Looks to me like you need Wine (which is quite unreliable) or Windows in a VM (much more reliable).

OK. Windows in a VM means I need to purchase windows, correct?

That's great. Do you know of a way to get free Excel too? Or, if current excel versions can be installed onto Windows 7 like the article you sent me suggests?

Don't know that. I'm actually not so Windows/Excel-savvy.

Have you tried the spreadsheet in Libre-Office? I have had some success converting Excel files and word files that all rely heavily on VBA. Occasioally things don't work as intended, but, could be worth a shot.

Let me quote what a forum user wrote (non-publically) when reading these 2 posts: [1], [2]
This is not a "free version of Windows" as claimed; instead, it uses the old Win7 feature to extend the "trial period" of 90-days several times. So, the claim is basically false.
Also, the OP wants links to a free version of Excel.
So, this whole thread is moving into the area of Piracy.
So let us make 2 things clear:
+ Microsoft Windows as such is not available for free, only for a free trial period.
+ Microsoft Excel is not available for free at all.
Microsoft is not the Salvation Army. They earn their money by selling their products and their services for money.
Stick to their license terms, or do not use their products.

lsemmens has pointed to a legal workaround, which may not be perfect, but which will spare you more trouble.

Agreed. In no way was I recommending otherwise.

Excel 2007 installs relatively easy under wine, I wanted later so paid for crossover (£38) and am now running Excel 2013 under crossover. I also have win7 running in a virtualbox (had to get a new win7 licence) and am running office 2016 in that. Fortunate in that I was able to get 2016 under HUP for less than £10.

If you want to run Excel (and I need it for my work), you are going to have to pay.
