mystery wireless network available overpowers local wireless on mint 17.3

Post by TalosIV »

newbie here, I think my machine has been hjiacked somehow but thought I'd ask about this before destroying this install. my home wireless connection is has become weaker however a mystery wireless network appears to be available to only this machine running linux mint 17.3. no Windows pc here of which there are 5 see this network as an available wireless net to connect to, nor do any of my neighbors.

The device mac address for this network is the local wlan0 interface on this pc and wireless net availability shows 100% signal strength on this pc alone when available wireless networks are viewed. there is also an sister network showing availability on only the linx mint pc and its called DIRECT-SFMOUSEmsMU. exactly the same as the image just change the connection name. Wireless activity is greatly diminished and I need to maintain a wired connection if there is to be any stability in the inet connection

if you try to edit the phantom connection it shows a ssid = DIRECT-UzMOUSEmsMR
MODE = INFRASTRUCTURE
mac address = wlan0

Been looking around here and you folks are way over my head so I hope this babble makes some sense.

thanks if you read this far... any thoughts?

Hi Lanny,
that's a strange one, but there is no need to zap the LinuxMint installation, just because of this one issue,
as long as everything else is working okay.

"" if you try to edit the phantom connection it shows a ssid = DIRECT-UzMOUSEmsMR "".
- - do you have a WiFi MOUSE in use ? - - one that doesn't need it's own Usb Dongle - to work ?

thanx for the interest Pierre. I was wondering if this would be better under the wireless topic here; I naturally went to newbie questions before looking around throughly.

and to be clear this system is not working ok if you want wireless internet connectivity. it seems to me and this is obviously rank speculation that the wireless driver has been hijacked/corrupted as the very strong available signal from the mystery wireless network seemingly jams out the conventional signal on this pc only. I take this machine and hold it over the wireless router and it hauls in about 70-75% while the phantom net holds strong at 100 or 95% and service is slow!

Been looking for rtl8188ee issues in futile so far.

does this dump turn any locks for you?

color this somewhat solved as neighbor with mac can see this broadcaster also at about 40%. why windows can't see it and why so strong on this is unresolved.
