Cinnamon processes (high CPU) load

Post by mangalores »

Hi,

I have a weird problem with the desktop processes being on full CPU load all the time after startup and I wonder how to find the issue.

When I kill the cinnamon processes and restart the desktop with "cinnamon --replace" things are down to normal. So something is messing things up for the processes started during startup.

I also notices it starting 4 desktop instances but everything is fine with one process and given my laptop only has 4 cores I'd like the desktop to only hog one or two CPUs at best anyway. Can one limit that or might this be part of the issue?

Thanks!

Hello mangalores and Welcome to Linux Mint Forums,

We need a little more info. Which version of Mint are you using
Could you go to a terminal and type this command and post the output back here.

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz

As said, hot/hack fix was killing the cinnamon desktop and restart a single instance with cinnamon --replace which seemingly works entirely fine but I'd appreciate some pointers in how to investigate what leaves the 4 startup instances of cinnamon in a fuss and how to possibly reduce the number of instances started.

Here the info:
Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon 64-bit

Here the output:

I've seen a few reports that ugrading the kernel to 4.15 series seems to help the t470's but not having one here have not tested that.
good luck.

Hi, thanks. Will look into it.

Any debugging tips other than manually kicking the desktop into gear with a monkey wrench? ;)
