Can't change screen resolution with AMD Vega 8

Post by shlulu » Fri Jun 29, 2018 7:18 pm

*update*
Fix at bottom comment.

Hey,
Installed Linux Mint Cinnamon 18.3, installation went fine.
However, I'm stuck on the native 1024x768 resolution with nothing in the resolutions bar besides it.
my processor is Ryzen 3 2200G RX Vega 8. In the AMD website the only drivers are for Windows 10, and installing past RX Vega drivers doesn't sound very well.
I searched in the forum and saw allot of either Nvidia\ Intel issues or past AMD issues.
I'm plugged with VGA on both ends, and xrandr showed this:
Screen 0: minimum 1024 x 768, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1024 x 768
default connected primary 1024x768+0+0 0mm x 0mm
Help?

Thanks

Hello! My sympathize for your problem (if it still persists). My current and previous computer(s) are AMD; the A and Radeon series CPU and GPU. I had no trouble with graphical matters on Linux Mint with the old computer, and only one issue this time which was at the fault of the game's developers. I have also indeed noticed a variety of AMD users file such complaints, but you can take some solace in that most if not all cases I encountered were solved, if the user did their part.

Getting down to business, now, I would ask:

1. Do you need to change the resolution? I've been satisifed with the default in both cases.
2. Have you tried manually changing the resolution via a terminal / command line? It can sometimes do what the GUI settings can not.

I also found this topic on this forum where someone else had AMD issues and it shows the resolution changing command and an example for you to try:

viewtopic.php?f=90&t=36817

It looks like xandr shows you the possible resolutions for your screen, and which res is currently selected (with the * notating it). And that you can change the resolution, then, with (for example):

Code: Select all

xandr -s 1024x760
I hope that topic has the answer, or the resolution adjustment command works, for you. Good luck!

Just knowing it's an AMD card ain't nearly enough.

The OP needs to post more info, copy/paste this to the terminal and copy/paste the text output here (no screenshots please):

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz

1. Do you need to change the resolution? I've been satisifed with the default in both cases. Yes, my screen suppourts up to 1920x1080 and it looks really big with the current one
2. Have you tried manually changing the resolution via a terminal / command line? It can sometimes do what the GUI settings can not. Can you help me with the command line? xandr is written below

It looks like xandr shows you the possible resolutions for your screen, and which res is currently selected (with the * notating it). And that you can change the resolution, then, with (for example):

Code: Select all

xandr -s 1024x760
xrandr -s 1920x1080
Size 1920x1080 not found in available modes

I hope that topic has the answer, or the resolution adjustment command works, for you. Good luck!
this thread is almost 10 years old, i tried 'cvt 1920 1080' and it replied
# 1920x1080 59.96 Hz (CVT 2.07M9) hsync: 67.16 kHz; pclk: 173.00 MHz
Modeline "1920x1080_60.00" 173.00 1920 2048 2248 2576 1080 1083 1088 1120 -hsync +vsync
A person from another consultation forum replied that AMD Ryzen 3 APU's are problematic right now with Linux, since it's fairly new and AMD hasn't updated Linux drivers yet.
He suggested i should update to the current version of Cinnamon ,and more importantly updating the Kernel ( 4.17.3- most updated?).

What do you guys think?

I didn't realize how old this thread was, it was near the top and had 0 replies, unless I got lost, so my apologies, to the forum (for bumping) and the user (for not having gotten help yet); but, at least now the issue can be addressed for the original user and anyone else that may find there way here having the same problem.

That aside, good call. I just updated to Linux Mint 19 Cinnamon today and have even less issues than I did on 18.3 with my AMD computer.

Now, 18.3 is a great release, but it seems newer versions, as was suggested here, have more compatibility.

I would second the recommendation, thus, to make sure you're up to date, actual updates in fact, but also at least making sure you have at least Linux Mint 18.3, if not 19.

At least if the recommendations from the other forum topic I linked to, like manually changing the resolution with xandr in terminal, don't work.

...you might wanna have a look at this recent thread in regards to resolution 'stuck' to 1024x768 under Ryzen plus Vega graphics:
viewtopic.php?f=59&t=270972

PS:...it should be needless to repeat here, but here it is again, the good ole "you've been warned" reminder:
obviously make sure to back-up your data & use Timeshit before...

So turns out with the update to Cinnnamon 64 bit 19.0 version the resolution supports up to the native 1920X1080 screen resolution.
However, I'm still getting a feeling of a ''dragged'' mouse cursor when I'm working with the system, as well as poor video result while playing basic video games and even Youtube. In Windows for instance it would be because of uninstalled drivers.
So the solution right now is simply wait for AMD Linux supported drivers?

Another question, is it important to update the Kernel even after I updated the system& everything through 'update manager'?

Cheers
