Just installed latest version of Linux Mint. I love it so far!

I went to update to the newest kernel and now i get an error during boot, which leaves me unable to login.

Could not update .ICEauthority file /home/username/.ICEauthority

Would appreciate any help to get around this, fix this or whatever it takes.

Thanks

at the login screen

1) CTRL-ALT-F1 to get to terminal window

mv .ICEauthority Old.ICEauthority

now reboot and see if error is gone - if not then continue with below

The recommended way is to simply take the ownership of the files/directories recursively -
Code:

sudo chown -R user:user /home/<the desired home directory>

where "user" is to be replaced by the new user id which you have created/changed.
This only changes the user and group of the files/directories, and keeps the other permissions same as they should be

switch back to the login screen by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F7 or F8

If you are a newbie like myself I would advice you to do a fresh new install of LM19 Tara. And when the welcome screen pops up after the new install DONT immediately select new updates.

Make sure you get to select PREFERENCES first in the software update screen. Then select the menu item which makes it possible to show diffferent characteristics of the software updates. You can choose to select the different levels ranging from 1 to 4. In LM18 it was standard to NOT include level 4 updates. In LM19 however it is standard to inculde these sensitive levels 4 updates. Deselect those level 4 updates. Lots of people have gotten into trouble with the new LM19 regarding those level 4 updates.

I love LM19. I think it is better at a lot of things than LM18, but for newbies these standard level 4 updates can be too tricky. Avoid level 4 is my advice. You dont need it,unless you have brand new hardware that doesnt work without it.

Which version is that? https://www.linuxmint.com/download_all.php

Which kernel is that? And does "went to update" mean you did update, or you just tried to update?

Have you tried booting and logging in with your previous kernel and then posting the output from:

Code: Select all

ls -al ~/.ICE*
Of course if you can boot and login with the previous kernel, then the .ICEauthority file probably isn't the culprit.

It should look like:

Code: Select all

$ ls -al ~/.ICE*
-rw------- 1 username username 660 ...
