LM 19 - very slow boot
Hi.
I'm trying Linux Mint 19 (really liking it so far ) and installing to a clean, freshly formatted SSD on an AMD CPU/GPU based system with 16 gigs ram but after install, boot times are really slow (minutes). Shut down is also slow, but not as slow as boot up times.
I've tried a couple of different SSD drives, thinking that the first one I tried may have been showing it's age (it's a few years old now and been formatted many times while trying different operating systems), but boot times really are slow. I've tried both Cinnamon and Mate and both are very slow to boot, after a clean fresh install.
I tried the Beta of LM 19 a few days before the full release and that did not have the slow boot problems.
Anyone else seeing these slow boot and shut down times with LM 19 ?

Re: LM 19 - very slow boot
Update: ....
I've just grabbed a copy of LM 18.3 "Sylvia" (Cinnamon) and installed it on the same computer and exactly the same hardware and boot up and shut down times are pretty quick. It does appear that the problem with very slow boot/shut down for me is with LM 19

Re: LM 19 - very slow boot
me too, this is maybe Ubuntu 18.04 fault
Re: LM 19 - very slow boot
I'm running Mint 19 on an old Toshiba Satellite 775. I just timed from executing the reboot command to the time the cinnamon desktop appeared. One Minute 17.52 seconds. I never timed Mint 18.3, but the boot time doesn't seem too slow for me. OTOH, I'm 65 and not in a hurry anymore
Re: LM 19 - very slow boot
All
I have the exact same problem VERY slow boot on an older computer. I replaced 18.3 with 19 and boot times were 7.3 minutes, shut down was about 6 min. I reloaded 17.3 mate (I had it handy) and with the upgraded processor, SSD and RAM (preparing for 19) boot time is measures in seconds.
Below is my laptop with 17.3, I'll reload 19 and make an identical post, so give me about a hour

Re: LM 19 - very slow boot
All
Just an FYI, I tried the new Ubuntu as well and the boot times were just as slow, I know there is a command that displays boot time for each segment, I'll search before going back to 17.3, I'll edit this post if it says anything.

Re: LM 19 - very slow boot
Linux Mint 19, as I experienced, is very buggy. May be it's the fault of Ubuntu Bionic. I don't know, Linux Mint Tara sucks.
I don't know, did you try the kernel before 4.15.0-20? I had my desktop running buggy after installing the kernel 4.15.0-20 on Linux Mint 18.3. My laptop is running the kernel 4.15.23 and Linux Mint 19. I'm currently having no problems. But check if rolling down the kernel can fix your problem?

Re: LM 19 - very slow boot
Just done another clean install of LM 19 (Cinnamon) and this time, did not update to the latest kernel and the slow boot/shutdown problem is not there.
It would appear, as a number of people have suggested, that updating to the latest kernel is causing these slow boot times?
Hopefully, the next release will address this issue of slow boot/shutdown problems. As it is, LM 19 seems to be performing very well
Thanks to all those who responded.... cheers!

Re: LM 19 - very slow boot
@ afineman Slow with two different distributions? Use the Disks accessory to look at the SMART report for your hard drive. An ailing magnetic drive suffers silently with hard-to-read and hard-to write blocks. Age or on-time is not a reliable indicator of the internal state of the storage, some fail after only months of light activity, some are still running with zero bad sectors after years of continuous use. SSD, I don't know. Odd that Mint17 works normally though.
Re: LM 19 - very slow boot
In my case it also appears that after updating to the newest kernel but then going back to an older kernel doesn't fix the problem. My system was still slow.sam_glaim wrote: ⤴Thu Jul 12, 2018 3:39 pm Just done another clean install of LM 19 (Cinnamon) and this time, did not update to the latest kernel and the slow boot/shutdown problem is not there.

Re: LM 19 - very slow boot
I did a clean install and didn't allow the update to the new kernel.... sounds like going back, still leaves behind whatever it is that causes the slow boots?Pepi wrote: ⤴Thu Jul 12, 2018 3:54 pmIn my case it also appears that after updating to the newest kernel but then going back to an older kernel doesn't fix the problem.
