[SOLVED] The repository 'http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu tara Release' does not have a Release file.

Post by ugly » Fri Jul 13, 2018 1:00 am

Whenever I install Mint, I always end up with an error in the Update Manager. I get the red X icon and the error is:

Code: Select all

The repository 'http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu tara Release' does not have a Release file.
I get similar errors on previous versions of LM.

I get a similar error if I run from a live USB, make no changes, and run the update manager:

Code: Select all

The repository 'cdrom://Linux Mint 19 _Tara_ - Release amd64 20180626 bionic Release' does not have a Release file.
Here is the output of sudo apt-get update:

Code: Select all

How do I fix this issue? And why am I always getting this error, even on new installs?

Because there is no such repository, and it's certainly not configured on the .iso. So either you added that manually to your repository list or you downloaded a tampered with iso. Post output of

Code: Select all

inxi -r
if you need help fixing it.

Your sources are messed up. For example, Ubuntu doesn't provide a 'tara' release but a 'bionic' release (19.04). you would get a 404 error with that line I've left quoted above.

I don't use Mint so you're going to have to wait for someone to come along that can tell you what the default sources should look like for Mint 19. In the meantime I'll install Mint 19 in a VM and if you haven't received a reply by the time I'm done, I'll post the contents of sources.list for you.
There are no silly questions, but there are silly answers.

<OT>

Weird. Your post is almost 20 minutes ahead of mine and I'm swearing blind to myself it wasn't there when I opened the thread and hit reply. Maybe Alzheimer's is starting to kick in.

Maybe I've transcended to true ninja form.

No actually if it's not your Alzheimer's I think it's a forum issue. I had the same thing once where I would not see the most recent posts in some threads while logged in, but I would see them when logged out. Was ok again after clearing the cookie.

Maybe it has something to do with the TZ being out of whack. Posts show up one hour later than actually posted. I'll send a PM to the admin.

Okay, I think I know why it's happening.

I have a script I run when I set up a new system that I run to set up and install software that I like. Some of it was from when I first started using Linux and didn't understand what I was doing. I think I copied something that I read in a forum somewhere that adds the erroneous repository. So now I know why I keep getting it whenever I set up a new install.

Since that script is one of the first things I do when I install, that's why I always get it.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

You're most welcome. Just in case, the file you need for a stock set of repos is /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list

Code: Select all

# Do not edit this file manually, use Software Sources instead.

deb http://packages.linuxmint.com tara main upstream import backport #id:linuxmint_main

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic-updates main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic-backports main restricted universe multiverse

deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ bionic-security main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ bionic partner

Thanks for the followup. I was able to fix the issue. I removed the repository from /etc/apt/sources.list.d

My script had this in it:

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu `lsb_release -cs` partner"
I must have found it on some forum before I knew what I was doing (not that I know much better now).

I lesson against blindly copying stuff you see posted in help forums.

I'll mark this as solved.

Hello everyone I'm adding this post because I have a very similar problem but the error is:

Err:19 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu tara Release
404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.161 80]
Reading package lists... Done
E: The repository 'http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu tara Release' does not have a Release file.

So same error but different repository, I tried to view the repo list as shown above and this link isn't mentioned in the file, I also tried to replace the file with the stock repo shown above but again the error persists. So can anyone help me out here? Where is this link coming from? It's weird because I literally installed Mint 19 two nights ago and really didn't do much with it.

Thanks in advance everyone
