Installing AMD RX460 driver HOW DO YOU DO THIS?

Post by newbi462 » Fri Jul 13, 2018 2:47 pm

OK, this is related to another thread I have going in HARDWARE but figured worth asking because I am apparently dumb; because to me it seems like there are conflicting tutorials from AMD on how to install the "correct" driver

I have 2 tutorials I found:
https://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articl ... tacks.aspx
and
https://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articl ... stall.aspx

One wants you to run "amdgpu-install" the other "amdgpu-pro-install"

One wants you to "Reboot" the other wants you to "sudo reboot"

And nowhere can I find if you want the Ubuntu 18.04 or Ubuntu 16.04.4 ver?

I already broked the Mint 18.3 OS once trying to make heads or tails of which instructions to follow, the logic at the mont is these drivers may fix my issue with this card, but no clue how to install it?

You have my permission to treat me like a complete newbie if it will get this done, assume I know nothing and need a STEP1>STEP2 until done list... from what I see with all the AMD posts a HOW TO THAT MAKES SENSE OF THIS SOUP is needed by a few

They have been tested on Ubuntu 16.04.4
So you'll need to use Mint 18.3 probably, not sure which Kernel version. Might be worth using 18.1.

Follow the instructions in the first link.

Don't run the

Code: Select all

sudo apt dist-upgrade
command in Mint... to coin a phrase you'll 'Frankenstein' the OS with Ubuntu.
One wants you to "Reboot" the other wants you to "sudo reboot"
Wouldn't worry to much about that, Use the click method to re-boot your machine or

Code: Select all

shutdown -r now
they all do the same.

Try to make a timeshift snapshot before trying if you can.. I think its now available in earlier versions of 18.

Good luck.

What do you need a driver for? I have a RX480, no proprietar driver. Works great; had to do http://askubuntu.com/questions/405071/ddg#444559 for DP/HDMI audio. Isn't avoiding proprietary drivers the main reason to get an AMD/INTEL GPU?

Are you doing sound over the DP/HDMI?

And the link you sent to was about "interference" not no sound at all over the DP/HDMI?

As for the WHOLE POINT, I just want my sound to work...

did the

Code: Select all

sudo nano /etc/pulse/default.pa
Replace the line

"load-module module-udev-detect"
with
"load-module module-udev-detect tsched=0"
and save file.

Code: Select all

sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
Insert options snd-hda-intel vid=8086 pid=8ca0 snoop=0 at the end of the file.

Reboot the PC

Still no sound

I had DP sound when I did a fresh install of Mint 19, with fedora it didn't work until kernel 4.17. Pheronix says this that may help you
With Linux 4.15, AMDGPU DC is just enabled by default for Vega hardware. If you are on GCN 1.1 or newer with AMDGPU and want to use DC, you need to use the amdgpu.dc=1 kernel module parameter for activation.
DC is needed for HDMI souund

Ok this is 18.3 which seems to cap at

Code: Select all

uname -r
4.13.0-45-generic
So how do I put in this "amdgpu.dc=1 kernel module parameter for activation."

What do I add to what file where?

It is my understanding that Mint 19 is in beta and not suggested for production systems at this time?

I don't think 19 is considerwed "beta", but it hasn't had time to become ultra stable. I don't think the kernel param will work on a kernel pre 4.15; https://github.com/M-Bab/linux-kernel-amdgpu-binaries should give you HDMI sound though

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBootParameters is how to add kernal perams

I dislike proprietary drivers and will do my best to avoid them

Can I add those binaries if I added the AMD vid driver?

Basically, be grinding at this trying to get my sound working...

Easiest is to install the kernel I linked too, or upgrade to mint kernel =>4.15 and add the parameter. The proprietary driver is tightly linked to *buntu, and is prob fine; but I can't suggest it

No, what I mean is I installed the driver from AMD but that did not fix the sound... So if I DL the git you linked to will that mess it up?

I do not care if I am "proprietory" or "no propriotary"

I just need muti monitor and sound and stable... so if I need to un install the AMD driver to try your fix I need to know that, and how to do that

I can't guarantee how the new kernel will play with the proprietary driver, but I am almost certain it'll provide sound

IDK how you'd uninstall it

OK I have burned a Mint 19 Disk so will see if sound works while running that live... early days of this system so have not set it up yet...

Honestly real pro con...

The kernel you link to is like something I had to do on a laptop to get UE LINUX to work with all the hardware... was the liqeish kernel... and it fixed the problem but broke updates so now I cant maintain that system.

Where if I go 19 I may have stability issues but better update support... I am guessing 18.3 wnt ever have the 4.15 kernel 19 has natively will it?

Mint 19 was a FLOP, when I booted the Live DVD, I had sound, so I tried to install,... AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

The installer crashed and screwed up GRUB so I could boot nothing... I logged what I could of what it did because when the installer crashed it just locked up and would not let me end it or send the bug report... So been spending the last few hours re installing Mint 18.3 and doing the updates to be ready to try your fix.

the results of that

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg -i [linux-headers-name].deb [linux-image-name].deb firmware-radeon-ucode_*_all.deb
dpkg: error processing archive [linux-headers-name].deb (--install):

So no clue if this worked, or if I have done all the steps, it dont say to reboot, but going to

Is there any way to update Mint 18.3 to drivers and kernel in Mint 19? Would install Mint 19 but it is unistallable

OK I MUST BE TIRED FROM DOING THIS FOR 2 DAYS: installed the "image" and "header" deb

Code: Select all

uname -r
4.17.2amdgpu.18.06.19+
HAZA and there is sound     :x   :D

Oh, ya when an install wants you to be online to do it you tend to connect it to the network :( so basically you cant install Mint 19 if you are connected?

I just turned Ethernet off from the livecd and updated after first boot. The post has been stickied, it doesn't affect old non+efi computers

AFAIK It's not the type of connection, *buntu released a bad package, and if the install is online- it will download and use it

Well there's no rush to upgrade and you don't have to do clean installs. I think they're releasing new ISOs though
