Linux Mint 19.0 64 bit "Tara" and Codeweavers CrossOver 17.5.0 32 bit

Post by Welly Wu »

I own a mid-2016 Acer Predator 17X (GX-791) gaming notebook PC and I installed Linux Mint 19.0 64 bit "Tara" on it successfully. I purchased Codeweavers CrossOver for both Apple MacOS and GNU/Linux and I installed and unlocked version 17.5.0 32 bit for Debian and Ubuntu based GNU/Linux version successfully. After installing my Microsoft Windows software applications and products, the Windows Applications menu does not show up in my Linux Mint menu panel.
I right clicked it and tried to edit the menu system, but the Windows Applications are empty. There is a feature within Codeweavers CrossOver to recreate menus for the desktop environment, but it failed to create the Windows Applications menu and the launchers for each software title. I created a support ticket with Codeweavers to get technical support, but I decided to log in here to ask how do I "see" my Windows Applications menu and the launchers so I can add them to my favorites and panel for quick access?

Can't help much other than to say that crossover (17.5.0-1) works fine with 18.3 cinnamon as shown below. I've got three bottles, office 2013, kindle and win98 for everything else. Which DE are you using cinnamon, mate or xfce?

I'm using Cinnamon, but on Linux Mint 19. I am going to wait for Codeweavers to respond to my support ticket on Monday.

If you get a fix from codeweavers can you post it here (or if not, report progress). I'm still running 18.3 but plan to update to 19 soon. If I hit the same problem you've got would be nice to know the answer.

what you can try - - is to Log-Out & then Log-In again - - this does often fix that issue,
where your newly installed program, doesn't show up, initially in the Menu Tree or under Windows Applications.
:)
also2: have you tried a help query in the Linux Sub_Forum on the crossover site ?.

as to myself - I've got all of my bottles backed-up & simply import them, into the newly installed Crossover.
& this does seem to work for those programs, that I'd use on an regular basis.

this also means that I've not recently had to actual install any programs, either.

Codeweavers told me that they can't reproduce this issue in Linux Mint 19 thus they can't fix it yet.

First, they told me to do this BEFORE I installed Codeweavers CrossOver 17.5.0 (32 bit):

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
wget -qO- https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/Release.key | sudo apt-key add -
sudo apt-add-repository 'deb http://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ artful main'
sudo apt-update && sudo apt upgrade
sudo apt dist-upgrade
Second, they told me to do this BEFORE I installed Codeweavers CrossOver 17.5.0 (32 bit):

Code: Select all

So as to re-replicate the problem. I did a fresh install of Mint 19. Before i installed crossover i ran in terminal :
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386 ; sudo apt-get update
then i installed the .deb package.
I imported my archive bottles and installed a notepad. The windows applications showed up in the menu.
I did not have to do what was suggested in the link.
I tried this on my own too:

Code: Select all

I tried the cxmenu command and I see these permission errors:

wellywu@AVADirect:/opt/cxoffice/bin$ ./cxmenu --help
Usage: cxmenu --sync [--bottle BOTTLE] [--mode MODE] [--verbose]
or cxmenu --start MENU [--wait-children] [--enable-alt-loader FLAG]
[--bottle BOTTLE] [ARGS...]
or cxmenu [--bottle BOTTLE] [--crossover] [--install] [--uninstall]
[--removeall [--pattern PATTERN]] [--mode MODE] [--arch ARCH] [--help]
[--create MENU [create-options]|--filter FILTER]
[--delete] [--purge] [--verbose] [advanced-options]

Makes the Windows menus available to the native desktop environment and
provides a command-line interface for managing these menus.

Options:
--sync Scans the bottle's Windows Start Menu and Desktop icons and
updates the menu list accordingly
New menus will receive the mode specified by the --mode option
and will be installed if appropriate. Obsolete menus will be
uninstalled and deleted
--sync-uninstall-none Instructs --sync not to uninstall and delete obsolete
menus
--sync-install-none Instructs --sync not to (re)install modified or new
menus
--start MENU Runs the specified menu entry
--wait-children Wait for the application and all its children to exit
--enable-alt-loader FLAG Enable the use of an alternative Wine loader
ARGS... Arguments to pass to the menu entry being run
--bottle BOTTLE Use the specified bottle. If this option is not used,
fallback to $CX_BOTTLE and then to 'default'
--crossover Sets the correct options for working on the CrossOver menu
--mode MODE Sets the menu install mode. If the install mode is 'install' the
menu will be installed by subsequent --install operations. If it
is set to 'ignore' it will be ignored by such operations
--mode-filter Specifies the menus to set the mode on. See --filter
--install Exports the menus so they can be used from the supported
native desktop environments (e.g. GNOME, KDE)
This operation ignores menus that have their install mode set
to 'ignore'
--install-filter Specifies the menus to install. See --filter
--uninstall Removes the menus from the desktop environments, even if their
install mode is 'ignore'
--uninstall-filter Specifies the menus to uninstall. See --filter
--arch ARCH Sets the architecture of the executable that the menu will run,
to inform other subsystems; valid values are 'i386' or 'x86_64'
--arch-filter Specifies the menus to set the arch on. See --filter
--removeall Each bottle has a unique id which is used to tag its menus
This option uninstalls any menu bearing the bottle's id
--pattern PATTERN Specifies that --removeall should uninstall any menu
that bears an id matching the specified regular expression
--help, -h Shows this help message

Advanced options:
--create MENU Creates the specified menu. The menu is specified as a
slash-separated path starting with either StartMenu for regular
menus or Desktop for desktop icons
To create a menu folder, add a trailing slash
--description DESCRIPTION The menu description
--type TYPE Either 'windows' for Windows '.lnk' files, or 'raw' for
arbitrary menus
--icon ICONFILE Native path to the XPM icon file. Environment variables
are allowed using the ${VAR} syntax
--command COMMAND The command to run for this menu. Environment variables
are allowed using the ${VAR} syntax
--shortcut SHORTNAME If set, a command line script by that name will be
created
--filter FILTER Specifies the menus to operate on. FILTER is a
colon-separated list of menus, where each menu is identified by
a path as described in the --create option. By default the
operations apply to all known menus
--menu-root ROOT Specifies where to create the menus
--delete Deletes the menus. Note that this does not uninstall them
--delete-filter Specifies the menus to delete. See --filter
--purge Same as --delete, but also deletes the corresponding Windows menu
--query Outputs the list of supported menuing systems for both 'Start
Menus' and 'Desktop' icons. Then outputs which menuing systems
each menu is installed in
--query-filter Specifies the menus to query. See --filter
--list-files Reports the files used by the menuing systems.
--list-files-filter Restricts the menuing system files reporting to those of the specified menus. See --filter
--destdir DIR Prefixes the specified directory to all created paths
--ignorelist LIST Specifies a colon-separated list of menuing systems to
ignore. If the list starts with a '+' then it is appended to
the 'MenuIgnoreList' setting. Otherwise it overrides it
--mmenu-never LIST Specifies a colon-separated list of menu entries to omit
from CrossOver's own menu system. (Note: this option
controls CrossOver's menu rather than desktop integration.)
--utf8 Specifies that the script parameters are in UTF-8, regardless of
the default system encoding
--conf FILE Specifies an alternative file containing the menu list
--tag TAG Specifies an alternative tag to be used for identifying the menus
--ro-desktopdata Treat the desktopdata / bottle directory as read-only
--scope SCOPE Specifies whether to look for a managed bottle or a private
one
--menu-scope MSCOPE Setting this should almost never be needed as it defaults
to the scope of the bottle. If set to managed and given
administrative rights, the menus will be installed in a
system-wide location. Otherwise they will be installed for use in
the current account only
--verbose Output more information about what is going on

Why is it that I keep getting permission denied errors? How do I fix it?
Mind you, I had already installed Codeweavers CrossOver 17.5.0 (32 bit) on Linux Mint 19.0 64 bit "Tara" and I had reversed the order. Now, my Windows Applications menu is missing from Cinnamon, MATE, and XFCE. It looks like I am going to have to reinstall Linux Mint 19.0 64 bit "Tara" and follow their instructions exactly all over again. I'd rather not do that and wait for them to provide me with a solution

it won't fix the issue but check that you have "ubuntu/ bionic main' " not "ubuntu/ artful main' " for mint19/ubuntu18

Codeweavers is stuck at trying to figure out how to solve this problem that is reproducible on my three gaming PCs running Linux Mint 19.0 64 bit "Tara."

Is there anything that this community can do to help me? I want to be able to see my Windows Applications in my Cinnamon, MATE, and XFCE menus.

What may fix your issue is sudo chown -R $USER:$USER /home/$USER

Maybe one of your install attempts you used sudo somewhere that you shouldn't have and uninstalling probably didn't remove the root owned entries in your home folder.

Is it safe to change the ownership and permissions of my /home/wellywu/.local/share/applications? I was thinking about doing this:

Code: Select all

sudo chown -R wellywu:wellywu /home/wellywu/.local/share/applications
sudo chmod -R 0755 /home/wellywu/.local/share/applications
To be followed by these commands in the terminal:

Code: Select all

wellywu@AVADirect:/opt/cxoffice/bin$ ./cxmenu --bottle Amazon_Kindle_for_PC --install
or
wellywu@AVADirect:/opt/cxoffice/bin$ ./cxmenu --bottle Amazon_Kindle_for_PC --sync
What do you guys think? Is this safe to do and is it going to solve my problem that I posted about in this thread?

It worked. I now see my Windows Applications and my CrossOver bottle titles in my Cinnamon menu. This is solved.

Same problem, I'm testing LM19 on a spare T430 to sort out all the bugs before I update my daily driver, another T430.

Copied /home partition over to test T430 and did a clean install of LM in a separate / partition. Installed crossover 17.5 (same as daily driver). It found all my bottles and applications, but no items in the menu.

Solution - go back to daily driver and export the office 2013 bottle, copy over to test T430, delete existing office 2013 bottle on test T430 and import new bottle, voila menu entries appeared.

BUT... now have a problem where any office 2013 app just appears as a black window :( Have raised a new post on this.

@ AndyMH I've been playing around with MS Office 2013 & I've found a similar set of issues to yourself.

Note: with the Crossover Software,, do check Edit - Preferences - Online Integration:

I used Crossover Linux 16.0 just fine in Linux Mint 18 versions, but I'm also having issues with it in Linux Mint 19. So far, none of my old games are installing or running again. Guess I'll wait a while before buying version 17, after they've had time to patch their program to deal with the new release.
