scan-utility in combination with brother dcp-135c scanner

Post by Jedidiah »

I have a brother dcp 135c printer and scanner. With help of this forum i was able to install the printer drivers.
I am trying now to make the scanner work.

I did download and install de following drivers from the brother site (http://solutions.brother.com/linux/en_u ... d_scn.html):

brscan2-0.2.4-0.i386.deb
brscan-skey-0.2.1-3.i386.deb

when trying the scan utility i get the folowing popup msg:

¨ AN ERROR OCURRED WHILE ACCESSING DEVICE/
The scan backend returned the following error: Error during device I/O"

After that a pop up with:
"NO DEVICES FOUND"

On the brother site i tried to follow instructions for "Setting for normal users (Required for USB Connection)" after installation:

Ubuntu 9.04
1. Open "/lib/udev/rules.d/50-udev-default.rules" file.
2. Edit "0664" to "0666" in "libusb device nodes" section.

Before the edit---------------------------------

# libusb device nodes
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ENV{DEVTYPE}=="usb_device", ... , MODE="0664"

After the edit----------------------------------

# libusb device nodes
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ENV{DEVTYPE}=="usb_device", ... , MODE="0666"

3. Restart the OS.

but when i tried to do the commands given Before edit i get these replies:
libusb device nodes
bash: libusb: opdracht niet gevonden
ehireme-desktop ~ # SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ENV{DEVTYPE}=="usb_device", ... , MODE="0664"
bash: ENV{DEVTYPE}==usb_device,: opdracht niet gevonden

I did not go forward with the instructions.

Can anybody help me? :?

I don't know dutch but I guess that
opdracht niet gevonden
means operation not allowed - which indicates that you tried to edit as a normal user - you must be root
I think the easiest way to do it in this situation is a right click in Nautilus
You have to install sane (I think only flegita is installed by default in Gloria) for the Brother scanners to work
And of course the scanner should be on
Read through the instructions again after you've installed sane

Code: Select all

apt install sane
Take it slowly and remember root and you'll be ok
Brother has good support for Linux even if the install procedure is a bit more complex than most
I have a DCP 7010 and I've had it working since Mint 3

thank you four your answer :)
"opdracht niet gevonden" means: command not found.
I installed sane as you sugested and reinstalled the drivers.
my printer scanner is on
still i get the same msg when trying to use the scan utiliy.

i tired the follwing commands for Scanner Setting for normal user:
ehireme-desktop ~ # libusb device nodes
bash: libusb: opdracht niet gevonden (command nout found)
ehireme-desktop ~ # SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ENV{DEVTYPE}=="usb_device", ... , MODE="0664"
bash: ENV{DEVTYPE}==usb_device,: opdracht niet gevonden (command nout found)

should i deinstall the drivers and deisntall ?

You should read the information so you do it correctly
Nowhere on those pages are you told to execute libusb as a CLI command
This is what it says on the Brother page (italics by me)
Ubuntu 9.04
1. Open "/lib/udev/rules.d/50-udev-default.rules" file.
2. Edit "0664" to "0666" in "libusb device nodes" section.

Before the edit---------------------------------

# libusb device nodes
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ENV{DEVTYPE}=="usb_device", ... , MODE="0664"

After the edit----------------------------------

# libusb device nodes
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ENV{DEVTYPE}=="usb_device", ... , MODE="0666"

3. Restart the OS.
Open "/lib/udev/rules.d/50-udev-default.rules" file as root is done with

Code: Select all

gksu gedit /lib/udev/rules.d/50-udev-default.rules
Be very careful when you do this!!
The only thing to do is to change a 4 to a 6 (0664 to 0666)
This changes permissions ....
If you successfully installed sane I think you have a working scanner when this is done

Do you have any sugestions left?

I attached a printscreen of the scan utlility ui

I had a vague feeling that there was something more
Let me examine my system and come back to you - and did you install the driver and scan key according to the instructions?

I use Gloria and I have a Canon-Pixma-MP170 and I only manage to make it work after installing Xsane and opening Xsane as root through terminal.

Now I can use it with Xsane or Scan Utility.

Jedidiah, if you manage to get it orking with Xsane, try opening with Scan-utility now. It might work like it did with me.

With Scan Utility (aka Flegita), Preview is on a tab beside General; you have to click the tab, then click the Refresh button to get a preview to set up. I don't know if you tried that or not. If it still just doesn't work, then meh on it :lol: - you have XSane working so life can go on :lol:

:D Yes absolutely live can go on.
but still i am wondering why scanner utlity does not work. There is no tab with Preview. only 2 tabs are seen: one with General and one with Advanced.

I am going to try to reinstall the program

i reinstalled the packages from the scanner utility mint meta main 7.0.5, mint meta gnome 7.4.3 and flegita 4.1. Stil the same.

I have upgraded to Helena and now have to reinstall my Brother Printer Scanner. I have the printer working OK and have installed the scanner driver OK and Sane and Xsane, but I cannot edit "0664" to " 0666" in libusb device nodes section. I have opened the "/lib/udev/rules.d50-udev-default.rules " file but can't edit it. I have tried to do it through Nautilus - clicked on 'open as root' and 'edit' and browsed to the file but it doesn't open. Once I have done this edit I will instal the scan key and hopefully will have a working scanner.

Managed to do this edit OK in Gloria but can't seem to work out how to open in root in Helena. Help appreciated.

There is nothing particular in editing that file as root, you must have done something wrong
But I discovered that my scanner did not work in Gloria..... (I don't use it very often)

Try

Code: Select all

gksudo gedit /lib/udev/rules.d50-udev-default.rules
If that does not open the file for editing something is wrong with your system
