After cinnamon (etc) update only chr mode black screen

Post by Denko » Tue Jul 17, 2018 3:29 pm

Today we had several updates, cinnamon among others. Since I did not update the kernel, I thought it was safe, but

Resuming after close lid on laptop (ASUS N7) I get a login prompt in a black text-only screen instead of ordinary graphic screen (cinnamon?).

I just got a nice fully (as far as I could tell) functioning after re-installing and NOT updating the kernel, and now it is (partly) ruined again by other upgrades.

Why all these buggy upgrades? This is certainly not beginners-friendly any more.

Anyway: Could someone please tell me how to start the 'ordinary' (graphic) screen from this black text-only one, so I don't have to reboot every time and loosing non-saved work?

You haven't said what version of Mint you're running or whether or not you are able to login... or what functionality you have once/if logged in.
If it's purely a text based login, no X or graphics then something is very much a miss, if you can say what runlevel you're in it would also be helpful.

Check you're runlevel by typing:

Code: Select all

runlevel
I run Mint 19 and Cinnamon. My runlevel is N 5 - Full multi-user graphical mode (with an X-based login screen)

If you are in a graphics/X windows session, then try this:
Presuming you can login and access the Menu, try launching the Login Window app from the Administration group.
You should be able to adjust the settings of the Login screen from there... log out to see if it changes anything...

Sorry,
LM 19 Tara
Runlevel gives me 'N5'
How do I start the usual graphic/full desktop from there?

Computer is ASUS N76VZ - nvidia card.

Normal startup (reboot) works fine. The problem is after closing the lid ('suspend' I would think). Reopening the lid I 'only' get the N5 command prompt screen.

Hmmm...
Try these in no particular order of preference:

Restart Cinnamon (this won't fix the problem but provides a workaround):
  • Ctrl + Alt + Backspace
Restart lightdm (this won't fix the problem but provides a workaround)
  • Switch to another session by pressing CTRL + ALT + F1
  • log in
  • type this => sudo systemctl restart lightdm then press enter
  • log out of this new session by typing exit then pressing Enter
  • Switch back to the X windows session by pressing CTRL + ALT + F7
Disable suspend/hibernation
I'm no expert but a bit of searching suggests that disabling suspend is recommended unless it works well (which it doesn't seem to on your system).

The simple method which I use on my desktop is:
Cinnamon Menu / Preferences / System Settings / Power Management
- Under Power Options set Suspend when inactive to Never
This doesn't disable the suspend function, rather it just doesn't use it...

If that doesn't help then try this link, Item 10.1:
Disable suspend (suspend-to-ram)
FYI: This is a reputable site and I use most of the tips... some just aren't relevant to my setup.

Thank you for all your help/info. I am however in another situation now.
First I tried to 'startx' after login - did give me 'fatal server error. no screen found (EE), xinit giving up, unable to connect to x server, connection refused.
Then after reboot I could no longer get beyond login screen.
I re-installed lm19, but still could not get beyond login screen.
I timeshifted back to a lm19 upgraded from 18.3 - had the same problem.
So now I am back on lm 18.3.

Lm19 is simply way too buggy for me.

Funny though:
After timeshifting back to 18.3 there seems to be left some parts of lm19. The login box & the update manager.

No problems yet, but can they be reverted back til 18.3 as well?
