How do I install cuda on Linux mint 18.3?

Post by LinuxMintNewbGuy » Fri Jul 20, 2018 9:58 pm

I'm a desperate newbie, since I've been trying to get cuda set up to get my gtx 1060 6gb up and running for a few weeks now. I successfully installed version 7.5 through many many trial(s) and error(s) and I just need to figure out which version I need to download and then how to install it.

Any help at all is appreciated. I can't even figure out what version I should be downloading since there are so many variations on nvidia's website. Thanks.

Go here:

https://developer.nvidia.com/cuda-downloads

Click Linux, x86_64, Ubuntu. At this point you will have the choice of 16.04 or 17.10. For Mint 18, you want the Ubuntu 16.04 version. Assuming you just want to run it on a standalone desktop/laptop computer, you want the deb (local) version. Click the Download (1.2 GB) button. You should be able to either open it with Gdebi, or save it to your hard drive, in which case you'll want to navigate to wherever you saved it to then double click it to install it with GDebi. I didn't actually install it, as this is not something I have a current use for, but if I were going to install it, that's the steps I'd follow.
