Can't open .xinputrc on login to Mint 18.x

Post by rwhismore » Sat Jul 21, 2018 4:47 pm

I tried to login a couple of days ago and was immediately logged out with the message: "Your session only lasted less than 10 seconds"

The details on the error session are:

initctl: Unable to connect to Upstart: Failed to connect to socket /com/ubuntu/upstart: Connection refused
/etc/mdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup...
localuser:russ being added to access control list
/etc/mdm/Xsession: 30: .: Can't open /home/russ/.xinputrc

A friend suggested going through the Advanced options to clean out some things, but none of those options seemed to work. Any input would be welcome.

To remove the package, press Ctrl+Alt+F1 and log in. Then run:

sudo dpkg -r virtualbox-guest-x11

Reboot

No effect. I actually had to --purge the package as the system wouldn't let me remove it.

Of note: I am running Linux on a parallel drive on my PC. Not sure if that would have an impact.
