Software Manager and Update Manager issues

Post by muzz » Sun Jul 22, 2018 12:40 am

New installation, but have attempted to install Wine, but unsuccessfully and ended up with:

Could not refresh the list of updates Malformed entry 2 in list file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/additional-repositories.list

In Update Manager the message above shows and I cannot get rid of it or use Update Manager.
ALSO, Software Manager does not open. ie, I click on it, but nothing happens.

I have attempted some online solutions but without success. Experience with Linux is minimal.

Help please,

Sounds like you made a mistake with adding some repository to your system. Share the output of this command run from the terminal (you can select and copy text through its Edit menu):
inxi -Sr

If you can spot the error in there yourself you can either edit the /etc/apt/sources.list.d/additional-repositories.list file manually or try running Software Sources and fix it from there. But that one may also not run.

Can you open Synaptic Package Manager?

If so once open click on "custom filters" on the left side and select "broken" and remove all broken packages - if you have no broken packages or the broken have been removed now click on "settings" then "repositories" and uncheck all the repositories under "Other Software" and try to refresh it

Run this from a terminal window:

Code: Select all

xed admin:///etc/apt/sources.list.d/additional-repositories.list &
then remove the second line in that file, save the file but keep the editor open.
Now try to run this in the terminal window:

Code: Select all

apt update
If it complains with a similar error message as above a malformed entry then switch back to the editor, remove the corresponding line it tells you about as well, save, rinse repeat until you've got no more error messages.

Did the above, and Update Manager not showing error message and Software Manager working again.

Hopefully this means all is well and I will attempt to install WIne again at a later stage.

Thanks for input from all.
