[SOLVED] Graphic Card: GTX 1060 Not showing Up In Driver Manager (LM 19)

Post by Ulfberht86 »

Hi :-)

I use mint 19 and I updated and upgraded as many times as I could, but nothing is showing up in the driver manager for my GTX 1060 6GB graphics card.

Why is it not in the driver manager and how do i install the proprietary driver now?

Thanks in advance for replying :-)

Please post the output of this terminal command:

Code: Select all

sudo apt install --dry-run nvidia-384
Enclose the results between [ⅽode] and [/ⅽode] code markers by selecting </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply.

Ok, based on that you can try:

sudo apt install nvidia-390

then i get this:

Code: Select all

Package nvidia-390 is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
However the following packages replace it:
  libnvidia-gl-390 nvidia-kernel-source-390:i386
  nvidia-headless-no-dkms-390:i386 libnvidia-gl-390:i386
  nvidia-kernel-source-390 nvidia-headless-no-dkms-390

You might try the reliable graphics-drivers PPA for installing a newer non-free driver than the official repo's contain:

So my card is too new to have proprietary drivers or what is the issue here? :-)

Your card id is missing in nvidia-driver-390 id list, install the graphics-drivers ppa:

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa
apt update
Then Driver Manager should offer a list of drivers for your card.

Can tell you that the card is well supported and has been for at least 3 years.

Code: Select all

Curious then that the driver manager didn't just find the driver after you installed. I see you're already getting help so won't confuse matters more.

To add the Proprietary GPU Drivers PPA in Ubuntu or Linux Mint and update the software sources, use the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa

sudo apt update

Close terminal then open then go to Driver Manager and install latest nVidia drivers

Code: Select all

Package nvidia-390 is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
I just wanted to alert everyone that starting with Mint 19, the Nvidia driver can be named differently. Instead of nvidia-390, it’s called nvidia-driver-390. So the command to install it would be:

sudo apt install nvidia-driver-390

Thanks everyone! :-)

I tried what Laurent85 suggested:

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa
apt update
after that my driver appeared in driver manager
