Still having some weird Samba problems regarding sub-folders [SOLVED]

UPDATE: Turned out I just needed to adjust the permissions on the shared folder to 775. Good to go!


Using a fresh (never frozen) copy of Mint 19/Cinnamon. All updates applied.

I recently made a post about not being able to browse out to a share via IP: viewtopic.php?f=90&t=275177

I thought the problem was solved by shortening the name (via removing the spaces). This did solve it, or so I thought. Here's the weird issue.

Going into \\192.168.1.5\marina resume would always fail, I remember getting a warning about the name is too long I think. When I renamed the share to just 'marinaresume', it worked. (\\192.168.1.5\marinaresume). I'm doing this from memory.... I think I even removed the space in the actual folder name as well, un-shared the folder then re-shared it. At this part in the story, everything seemed to work, I marked that thread as solved and went on with life.

This morning, I wanted to double check things and I came upon a new problem (which might have existed from the get go?)...... INSIDE \\192.168.1.5\marinaresume, there are sub-folders. \\marinaresume\cover letters, \\marinaresume\letters, \\marinaresume\bills, etc.

Once I'm in the main folder, no problem. However, if I go into a sub-folder, Windows 10 will give me an error about "Can't reach location, invalid parameter".
To fix this, I click on another shortcut.... \\192.168.1.5\pictures (which has tons of digital pictures divided into sub-folders for years/months) and click around for 2 seconds, back out and then I can go into \\192.168.1.5\marinaresume and go into any sub-folder without a single problem.

It's like going into \pictures, fixes SOMETHING then \marinaresume (and all sub-folders) work perfectly well.

I'm attaching a Samba log file for the Windows 10 PC I was using this morning, trying to access the share. Any ideas?

If it helps, the share is located on an MDADM array. I have about 10 other Samba shares on that same array and I'm 90% sure no other directories give me this problem, just \\marinaresume. (Will test this tonight and update my post accordingly.)

The only thing I changed from yesterday when I posted this until now is remoted into my server and just now added the 'force user = gene' and 'force group = gene' (so all files dumped on the shares will belong to my user/group). When I get home, I'll restart SMB and try things again.

I don't see anything wrong there as long as the permissions of the shared folder and everything under it allow it. I'm talking about Linux permissions here.

Hahahha....funny you should mention that. When I logged onto my server to carry out your steps a few minutes ago, I did a chown -R 775 /mnt/md0 to fix an issue with Plex not picking up some TV episodes. I went ahead and swept through the entire array. I was going to do 777 but thought better of it. I'll check the permissions on the files/folders inside that dir when I get home to see what they are.

It's still weird though that to fix things, I just needed to pop into the \pictures folder and go into a sub-folder or two, click around and then back out of there and go into the \marinaresume folder all my problems disappeared.

Every reboot of that Win 10 box, that's what I had to do to allow browsing into the \marinaresume sub-folders.

I'll experiment with file/folder permission on that directory from the Linux side then adjust accordingly and reboot the Win 10 box to see if the problem disappears.

Heck, if 777'ing that folder fixes it, I'll sweep through the array again with -R 777 :)

You were right, it was a permission problem with the share! I used 775 and the share is completely accessible from Win 7/10 boxes now, including all sub-folders! Thank you!
