(SOLVED)..Thankyou.....Mint 19 and Epson Perfection V33

Post by jmintscan » Sat Aug 18, 2018 6:10 am

Hi Newish to Linux but hopefully learning fast.
Was working with Mint 18 and successfully installed my Epson V33 scanner. Desktop motherboard gave up and decided to buy new very tiny Minix Z83-4. Came with Windows 10 Home but just could not settle back to Windows after Linux, so wiped the SSD and installed Mint 19 Cinnamon after testing and all seemed well, but had not checked scanner. Same install procedure as previous using bundle from Epson..iscan-perfection-v330-bundle-1.0.1.x64.deb.
No scanner found. Have read around and tried installing Sane utilities and XSane but no luck.. Do I have to go back to Mint 18 to get it to work, or is there something else I can do. Cheers,

Had a similar issue on Mint 19 with my Epson Perfection V600. The fixes in this thread helped me (specifically the creation of the relevant symlinks and udev rule.)

One other note, pretty sure you need to reboot after implementing those.

Ok here is where the newbie bit comes in.
Above posts referred me to this:

2. Epson Iscan

a) 'sudo ln -sfr /usr/lib/sane/libsane-epkowa* /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/sane'
b) generate '/etc/udev/rules.d/79-udev-epson.rules'
content:
# chmod device EPSON group
ATTRS{manufacturer}=="EPSON", DRIVERS=="usb", SUBSYSTEMS=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="04b8", ATTRS{idProduct}=="*", MODE="0777"
I ran the cmd in a) no problem
However I do not know how to generate the rules ref to in b). How do I generate the rules ? Incidentally following the refs links above have also confirmed that I have the same behaviour. listing the usb ports confirms the scanner is there and correctly identified, but the various scanning programs do not recognise that

To create the udev rule mentioned you need only create a text file called 79-udev-epson.rules in /etc/udev/rules.d. You can do this with the nano text editor by opening a terminal and entering this

Code: Select all

sudo nano /etc/udev/rules.d/79-udev-epson.rules
Then copy in the following and save and reboot.

Code: Select all

# chmod device EPSON group
ATTRS{manufacturer}=="EPSON", DRIVERS=="usb", SUBSYSTEMS=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="04b8", ATTRS{idProduct}=="*", MODE="0777"

Glad it worked for you. While I, myself, have dabbled with Linux for a number of years I have only begun to use it seriously for about the last two. I am usually hunting around looking for solutions myself, so its nice to be able to give one for once.
