Xorg update

Post by kalitomint »

Usually, Linux Mint 19 automatically selects all updates in the update manager. But this time I have just one update called "xorg", which is not selected. What does it mean? Is it because Mint judges it to be a dangerous update that could make the system unstable? Should I install it? I prefer not to install updates which are not necessary.

Is that an update for my Nvidia GPU, and is thus not selected because it is a third-party update?

Thank you for your answers!

N.B. Here is the description of the update in detail:

This metapackage provides the components for a standalone workstation running the X Window System. It provides the X libraries, an X server, a set of fonts, and a group of basic X clients and utilities.

Higher level metapackages, such as those for desktop environments, can depend on this package and simplify their dependencies.

It should be noted that a package providing x-window-manager should also be installed to ensure a comfortable X experience.

Packages included in this update: x11-common xorg xserver-xorg xserver-xorg-input-all xserver-xorg-video-all

Xorg is the the display server. Basically the fundamental foundation to having Linux with a GUI rather than CLI only.

You are correct to be wary as a bad Xorg update will result in a failure to launch a GUI. But then again if the update is fixing bugs or security issues you do want that update. This particular update is a bug fix.

Why it's not selected? - double check your update manager preferences to ensure that level 4 updates are selected.

For what it's worth I've never had an issue with a Xorg update and the update in question to version 1:7.7+19ubuntu7.1 I installed back on the 7/8/18 and everything is still working fine.
