Hello

I have set my update policy to newbie for updates

does this still give security updates?

is there a way to scan system for conflicts before applying updates?

To answer your first question, yes. As for the second, the system does that itself. The Mint rating for updates should be viewed more as a level of risk, but, that said, the OS is stable and unless Ubuntu have messed things up, you're not likely to hit problems, especially if you install higher rated items one at a time.
