Hi all
I've tried to get the email alert sound to work in Thunderbird, but it doesn't. Some sounds will play, others don't when I click on "play" in Thunderbird. It never seems to play a sound when I actually get a new email.
Is there a solution to this, for someone who's not very familiar with using the terminal? I am willing to learn about using the terminal, just not very used to doing it as yet.
If not, is there another email client that can do this, reliably?
Please, if this has been covered elsewhere, could someone point me to a solution?

These links below might provide useful information. There are also separate stand-alone mail indicators (applets, widgets, etc..) that can provide mail notifications some with sound, some are email provider specific like for GMail.

Thanks for taking the trouble to reply.
I've tried the above, but no joy- if Thunderbird is left open, it won't display an alert or play a sound on my system.
As far as I can tell, I've done exactly what I should. I suppose this isn't vital, but it would be a useful feature for me, especially at busy times.

Apparently solved...didn't say what changed/worked.

I recorded my own voice saying "you got mail" (just like the old tv ad) and placed the file in the system, one command Stop recording with CTRL + C

Then just like Phd21's second link "How to Customize the New Mail Sound | Thunderbird Help"
I pointed thunderbird to that file.
When thunderbird gets mail, it tells me.

I experienced this problem too. I have used Mint for more than 10 years and did not realize there was a SECOND volume option for "Alerts" built into the OS. I found the answer here: viewtopic.php?t=218478
