error: no symbol table

Post by Mintywav »

I managed to install 19 with a separate partition for my Home directory.
With minimal changes I am getting a message on boot (after what seems like a longish time with no visible disk activity)
that I had during my time exploring Mint 18:

Code: Select all

error: no symbol table.
Press any key to continue...
I have done most updates with no success at extinguishing this problem.

I have seen some posts saying something about Grub and something being built wrong from a couple of years ago.
I am Bios booting an USB connected SSD SATA drive with a couple of other OSs present on OTHER drives.

That error refers to an invalid EFI boot configuration. Check in the UEFI BIOS that you are booting from the correct EFI stub or ideally just reset your boot configuration in the bios and/or remove all other boot devices manually. It can also/additionally be due to the boot sector pointing to the wrong partition. so if the UEFI maintenance is not enough do a grub-install, install it to MBR.

thanks gm
this is an old MB, no Uefi.
I may try the grubinstall to my sdd but I am now trying to run bootinfoscript from https://github.com/arvidjaar/bootinfoscript that is supposed to tell me what I actually have at present which seems like a good idea.
I have saved it on desktop and set to executable but am getting "command not found". permissions are listed as 100777 on icon text.
OK still not sure why that did not work but right click run as admin did. nothing seems to jump out for me, but then what do I know :?:

If I got the tag right here is the output;

Code: Select all

OK, my bad, no EFI, but same problem. GRUB is looking at one of the boot files in ELF format and does not find a SHT_SYMTAB section in its header. So we need to fix the boot files. That's why I suggested to reinstall grub to make sure its own files are fine. So run a file system check, reinstall grub to /dev/sdd and that hopefully fixes it. Maybe even clean out the /boot/grub folder manually before you reinstall it to make sure that you only get fresh files in there.

I also note that according to your script you may have got GRUB installed twice:

Code: Select all

=> Grub2 (v2.00) is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdd and looks at sector 1 of
the same hard drive for core.img. core.img is at this location and looks
for (,msdos1)/boot/grub. It also embeds following components:
and

Code: Select all

Boot sector info: Grub2 (v2.00) is installed in the boot sector of sdd1
and looks at sector 13743912 of the same hard drive
for core.img. core.img is at this location and looks
for (,msdos1)/boot/grub. It also embeds following
                       components:
I don't know if that's a bug with the script or an actual problem of conflicting GRUB installations. Either way, my recommendation remains, reinstall grub (to MBR, sudo grub-install /dev/sdd).

I will look over all that you said and try to understand and of course try your suggestions. file system check is fsuck right (remembered from floppy disk days and Lynx at work  )

In my reading I saw this recommended but have not tried;
update-bootloader --reinit

from https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread. ... ost2797849

Thanks again

Since your /boot/grub is on your / root disk you can't run this while the system is loaded. To force a check on boot run this in a terminal and then reboot:

Code: Select all

sudo touch /forcefsck
I proposed the file system check because you did not mentioned that you had made any changes to your boot configuration, so file system corruption might be a possible cause.

That command does not exist on Mint. But his explanation basically matches what I said, with the only difference being that while he says not to run grub-install directly and not to install grub to MBR, I was saying the contrary - and I still am. Fun. :D

I am no longer seeing error: no symbol table in boot up after your advice. :D I did notice that from the Grub Menu display until a display of grub messages (I added verbose to the grub config.) is a full 2 minutes. This is on an older core 2 duo 2160 cpu @ 1.8 GHz w/ 2 Gigs ram. I am wondering if this is showing an undue waiting period for something??

Happy to help, thx for trusting me despite that other reference you found saying the opposite. ;)

That 2 minute waiting period is clearly a problem though. Did that occur only now or did that happen before already? That's not the GRUB messages you are waiting for, by the way, but the kernel messages. So it's possibly an issue with your current kernel. Check the kernel logs (run dmesg -H in a terminal to page through them) for errors or delays, the reason should be in there somewhere.

Another thing to try is if you still have kernels from older series installed, select them via the GRUB menu > Advanced options and see if the boot behaviour changes.

Also run a sudo update-grub just in case (the command that generates your boot menu and boot parameters).

PS: And good point raised by MrEen below, a missing mount could certainly be the reason as well.

Hi Mintywav.

A delay of this length is often due to /etc/fstab having a UUID the system can't find (adds 90 seconds to boot time) and swap is often the culprit.

You can check this with cat /etc/fstab and blkid in the terminal.

Now that you're running 19 this may not apply, but is worth checking anyway.

EDIT: The forum never showed me there was already another post by gm10 when I hit submit. Follow gm10's instructions before anything I say. :)

Ok I am sorry I took so long to get back here, I wanted to have the time to do as both of you have suggested.
dmseg -H did not seem to hold any relevant info. If the number to the left of the decimal is in seconds I would expect around 100 for the delay correct?
I BTW I put grub_cmdline_default="verbose" in grub. I see a lot of stuff displayed very quickly after the 2 minute delay. I would think whatever happens right before the first thing displayed (whatever that is) might be the cause of the delay.

The fstab file seems right. Could the floppy present there be the cause? I think i might just rem it out and see.

Well remming out the floppy did not help. :(
Could the fact that the OS is running on a USB SSD dock be a problem??

Possibly, it could have trouble initializing that, I remember having to pull the installation USB stick out and plugging it in again during boot in the past to work around that, I wonder if that would make a difference.

But again, it should display during the boot process what it is doing (if you're showing the boot logo just press Esc to see the text), so whatever it is showing during that wait time is what the problem is.

What boot logo? I get the Grub menu, then a black screen for 2 minutes, then a bunch of fast scrolling text (the result of the verbose option in the grub file ). I have tried the escape key during the black screen with no visible results.

The Bios does see the drive

Thanks again

Thanks. Try this, in a terminal run

Code: Select all

xed admin:///etc/default/grub
Then find the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT and add the parameter video=SVIDEO-1:d so that it reads something like

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash video=SVIDEO-1:d"
(if you had more parameters there just keep them)

Save the file then run

Code: Select all

sudo update-grub
Hopefully the boot delay will be gone after that.

That text gets logged, just read it later like this:

Code: Select all

sudo cat /var/log/boot.log

I am still wondering about this boot logo you mentioned.

And after trying the what was in your last post I am still having the same problem.

I am still wondering just what is going on in the time I have a blank screen.

also the text items that whip by when the booting continues seem to have a time stamp that is missing from what I see via

Code: Select all

sudo cat /var/log/boot.log
. Is there a way to get the time stamp to get saved to the log??

That's a shame, I don't know what the problem is then.

I'm not aware of any time stamps during boot, I don't think you can add them to that log. There's still /var/log/syslog, if you use journald then journalctl and also the kernel log via dmesg.
