Re: HP 6720s laptop - which mint version should be installed?
That's an extensive test you've performed, well done. I am surprised at the outcome. Sometimes it is needed to re-seat the modules for a proper connection. Try again putting them in as they were before testing.
So no better performance, but the memory is picky to say the least, I know mine isn't that selective about the memory.
I wonder, is the cpu running at it's designed speed? Something has to make your laptop that slow.

Re: HP 6720s laptop - which mint version should be installed?
The cpu speed is about 2/3 but I suppose it is throttling when no performance is demanded. All memory is there. cpu temp is not very high for a laptop. I don't know any further.

Re: HP 6720s laptop - which mint version should be installed?
Tnx Friend, any suggestions from forum are warmly welcomed I will test memory again as it was before testing...
I do not know also the cause of slowing down, what should I check further, apart from memory? Any recommendations Dear Friend?

Re: HP 6720s laptop - which mint version should be installed?
Maybe some issues can't be resolved. Just today I spent hours on a laptop where WiFi wouldn't switch on. Replaced the WiFi adapter, it is seen by Linux but with state 'down'. It does not turn on by the switch, nor by the bios setting, nor by anything else... alas, have to insert USB WiFi adapter.
Anyway, maybe if you change the subject to something like "Can't find why laptop is terribly slow" it will attract attention of people with more knowledge of hardware than we do.

Re: HP 6720s laptop - which mint version should be installed?
See, it worked
I suspect that you'll find the problem is this:
Code: Select all
Desktop: Xfce 4.12.3 (Gtk 2.24.31) Distro: Linux Mint 19 Tara
BIOS: Hewlett-Packard v: 68MDU Ver. F.0D date: 11/04/2008
Unfortunately I seriously doubt that you'll ever get Mint 19 running smoothly on your pet dinosaur.
Cheers.

Re: Can't find why laptop HP 6720s is terribly slow?
I will make an USB of 19 ISO and boot it later today on my 6720S to test that.
Re: Can't find why laptop HP 6720s is terribly slow?
Thanks friends, I do not understand code lines:

BIOS: Hewlett-Packard v: 68MDU Ver. F.0D date: 11/04/2008
What does it mean? I am really a novice guy

You don't need to understand it, that's what we're here for. It means what I said above.
catweazel wrote:There have been many, many changes to the kernel recently, and there's been a concerted effort to remove support for old stuff in the kernel as well. Furthermore your machine is at least 10 years old. It isn't going to work well, if at all, with an OS as new as Mint 19. You would be much better off looking at a lighter distro that has support for older hardware such as antiX or MX Linux. Alternatively you might try Mint 18.3.

Well, it's preferable to my suggestion

Re: Can't find why laptop HP 6720s is terribly slow?
Perhaps you can explain to me why the live USB works well with video=SVIDEO-1:d but yet the permanent install does not.
Which kernel is on the live USB of 19 xfce?
Noone seems to be able to answer why the live USB actually works better.

1) ...this bug (if you are actually experiencing the exact same problem) actually dates back to early 2016,
and it still hasn't been resolved - it's actually been classified as low priority.
Aka...if i really had an answer to your question, then...i'd have submitted a patch here.
I'm not that guy sadly
The kernel on Mint 19's live iso is...pretty much the same you get when you install it, 4.15.0-20 .
The bug itself as you can see from the bug report above, appeared with...4.4.x series. In Mint terms, 18.0.
...if i were to make a guess in the wild for your case (ie. in your other thread),
i would suspect the problem to lie in:

2) ...did i mentioned that you are hijacking a different person's thread?

Re: Can't find why laptop HP 6720s is terribly slow?
I had to edit the stick to get rid of the ridiculous "boot in 10 seconds" to get comparable results of 19 vs. 18.3, both XFCE-64. Well 19 boots on my 6720S in 90 to 120 seconds. It is possible the stick I used for 19 is a little slower than the stick I used for 18.3
On the desktop I found 19 less responsive than 18.3. It works, not as bad as on Peki's laptop but imho decisively less accurate as 18.3. If Peki likes the look of 19 he might try Peppermint, I have the impression 19 is inspired by Peppermint.
I had a problem with setting the display, whenever I would set the external screen I used as primary and turned off the laptop screen, I would get a blueish wallpaper with a mouse on it and nothing else, no deskbars, no icons and I was stuck.
I have a bunch of similar laptops, they were typically sold at the time with Windows Vista. With a SSD -I like to use Intel X25 SSD's that can be had dirt cheap now and still have plenty of live expectation on them- and 2GB of RAM Mint 18.3 XFCE runs pretty smooth imho. Don't compare it with the i3 or i5 or i7 monsters of today but it runs well enough for basic internet and office jobs. They fall back on graphic tasks though. I can't really watch TV on them.
I recommended using 18.3, with is really not less than 19, and it also is a LTS.
But I am afraid the problem with Peki's laptop is something else, and it will not run well either.
I don't know the market situation where Peki resides, but here the value of a 6720S is app. $25, not more. $50 buys a better laptop and $100 a significant better one.

Re: Can't find why laptop HP 6720s is terribly slow?
I have a Lenovo G700 which looks very similar, has slightly lower specs.
With an i3 cpu and upgraded to 8GB and Samsung SSD it runs very well on both Windows10 and Mint 18.3
I don't like the screen, never seem to find the right angle, the quality is down on what I use for normal displays.
After using external speakers for a while, the internal speakers are dead. They were crap anyway but sometimes having any speaker comes in handy.
The V310 comes with 4GB soldered to the mainboard and one expansion socket. This means you can expand it but never replace the original memory. Fitting a matched pair of modules will be impossible.
I don't know the quality of the screen which has a better resolution as my G700 so is a different panel.

Re: Can't find why laptop HP 6720s is terribly slow?
...Peki, did you tried the suggestion above to see if it makes a difference?
As said, it might or might not work, no promises, but here is someone with a similar processor model,
T2390 namely (yours is T2310), and the exact same GM965/GL960 integrated graphics from 2008.
...other than that, vansloneker with his suggestions pretty much covered it:
1) i'd also recommend 18.3 Mate / XFCE instead of 19, and...
2) quite important, i'd recommend using the 4.4.x kernel on such instead of the 4.15.x.

Re: Can't find why laptop HP 6720s is terribly slow?
There is an explanation. The linux distro sitting on the live system is not the distro that gets installed. The two are similar but not the same. The live media is tuned to work on the widest possible range of hardware so it stands to reason that, while in most cases but not all, the live system runs as well as the installed system, it is not true in all cases. The situation described in this thread appears to be in that latter category, unfortunately.

Re: Can't find why laptop HP 6720s is terribly slow?
Since neither Linux Mint 18.3 nor Linus Mint 19 works very well for some reason on this laptop HP2710p, I have resorted to installing Neverware's CloudReady OS which turns the laptop into something very similar to a Chromebook.catweazel wrote: ⤴Sat Sep 22, 2018 3:06 amThere is an explanation.
