Any good screen and sound sharing app (Linux to Android) ?

Post by ChrisHvide »

Hi there.
Are there any good app(s) that will allow me to screen and sound share my linux desktop to my android phone?
It has to be one that I can just turn on/off from my phone.
I don't need to be able to control linux from my phone, but would be a nice plus.
All I really need it for is to continue watching movies or videos in bed or while I'm at the toilet :)

Thanks in advance!

Hi ChrisHvide,

There seem to be some apps for displaying your Android screen on your desktop, but not much about mirroring your Linux desktop to your Android devices. It is easy to stream multimedia content (videos, music, pics, etc...) from your Linux computer to any DLNA/UPnP capable devices like Android devices and others.

Hope this helps ...

Thanks for your help, guys.
There doesn't seem to be much out there.
Guess the demand just isn't there.
I'll keep looking around though.

For full mirroring you can use any remote desktop solution with an Android client - e.g Teamviewer, NoMachine.

You can set up a vnc server on your linux machine (vino, x11vnc, tigerVNC) and use a VNC client on your phone (just search the playstore for vnc)

If you just want to watch movies on your pc on your phone there are lots of options.

1) Set up a samba share on your PC - use a file manager like Solid Explorer on your phone to access the share.

2) Set up a media server on the PC - Plex is good with the added bonus that you can watch your movies from your PC whilst on vacation in Barbados* as well as in bed and on the toilet... If you've got a Smart TV / Roku / Chromecast you'll also be able to watch your PC movies on a TV. Plex has an Android app.

There are lots of other media/DLNA servers with Android clients - e.g super lightweight minidlna, kodi etc.
