cannot use my spare drive

Post by roy pittman »

My LinuxMint box has a 250gB SSD and a 1 tB SATA drive. I wanted the SATA drive to be part of my regular file system perhaps as /spare/ or something like that.
However It is located as /media/roy/da0a939b-3ded-407e-9f01-113e860f83d5/ and I am unable to use it. I have tried to copy files from my fileserver ratliff and nothing happens: no error messages, no copying, nothing. Fortunately as the drive has no contents there is no data to lose. I am unsure how to proceed. Here is the output of /var/log $ tail syslog:

Sep 26 16:38:56 sartoris udisksd[1731]: Mounted /dev/sdb1 at /media/roy/da0a939b-3ded-407e-9f01-113e860f83d5 on behalf of uid 1000
Sep 26 16:53:11 sartoris kernel: [24498.949733] perf: interrupt took too long (3988 > 3980), lowering kernel.perf_event_max_sample_rate to 50000
Sep 26 16:54:21 sartoris sm-notify[8895]: Unable to notify ratliff, giving up

Suggestions?

Hi "roy pittman"

It would help to know more about your system setup. If you run "inxi -Fxzd" and "lsusb" from the console terminal prompt, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information.

How is the "1 tB SATA drive" drive connected (internal or External) and what file system(s) are on it? Have you ever had this drive working on this computer before? Check to make sure cable connections are secure to the drive and motherboard.

It is an internal drive and has never worked properly, or at all, really. I will use gparted to examine it and be back...

I see it here . . it's not a 1 but a 2 Tb drive by the looks of it.
Drives: HDD Total Size: 2275.5GB (3.0% used)
ID-1: /dev/sda model: Crucial_CT275MX3 size: 275.1GB
ID-2: /dev/sdb model: HGST_HUS724020AL size: 2000.4GB
Remember in Gparted, to switch drives use the drop down list in the upper right.

Thank you
Gparted was unable to find my processor (!) so I have attached a screenshot generated from the Mint Disk Tool.
spare_disk_screenshot.png
gparted gives me a black screen with the text "cannot find CPU" or something like that. The usual gparted screen does not appear at all. I am well familiar with the drop down list you mention. Yes, it is a 2 tB drive - my personal memory is not what it once was.

There is something missing on that screenshot.
The partition to the left actually reads:
Filesystem
Partition 1: D0
628GB Ext4

Somehow gimp did not pick that up, but it is there.

If you want one big partition on that drive, use that Disks program to delete the partitions, once complete, create a new 2 Tb partition.
(gear icon just below the description window box.)

Done and done. I now have a 3 tB Ext4 partition on that drive named "spare_disk".
I will reboot and see if it is then mounted.
