Fixing passwd mismatch: login & keyring? [Solved]

Post by lazarus »

Sorry... I know I've seen this covered elsewhere in these forums, but I just can't find the relevant posts. :(

A friend forgot their laptop's su login password and knowing that I'm also running the same OS - LM18.3 Cinnamon - asked me for help.

I simply edited the grub boot to bring up bash so I could allocate a new su pw. Reboot and everything looked fine. I can log in as root using the new pw and I've verified that it works for sudo from her normal login.

But during these tests I was given a msg from gnome-keyring saying something along the lines of "login password is different to key-ring password" and requesting what I imagine is the old, unknown pw.

The new pw fails (Der!) but after hitting [cancel] on the requestor everything moves along fine anyway. It's still a nuisance though and I know it should be a simple fix to delete the old key-ring, make it afresh and remove this nuisance requestor altogether..

Help please?

Run this and re-log:

Code: Select all

rm -v ~/.local/share/keyrings/login.keyring
