VNC for Mint 19

Post by turboscrew » Wed Oct 03, 2018 1:58 pm

Has anyone got some VNC server working on Mint 19 / Cinnamon?

What I need is crypted traffic (connecting over public network) and get hold on the current session.
The idea is to help my mom that lives 150 km away.
I need to see what she sees on the screen.

I've tried x11vnc that works fine in LAN without crypts, but adding the crypt causes problems.
TigerVNC only gave me blank screen. It also lacked the x0vncserver.
TeamViewer didn't install - a lot of qt5 packets missing, and not even found in the Mint 19 repo.

Somehow simple ssh causes the x11vnc to crash after a short while. Something about some stack...
(ssh -t -L 5900:localhost:5900 user@machine 'x11vnc -localhost -nopw -display :0'&)

I wonder if x11vnc with SSL would work...
Or maybe there are better ways?

Could the language cause the package problems? The Mint 19 is Finnish.
The downloaded image was checked - SHA or MD5, don't remember which.
The burned disk was checked against the image file. (cmp imagefile.img /media/cdrom)
So I think the installation media was not corrupt.

Probably the easiest way to do it is install Teamviewer. It's not open source, but it is free for private use, and I have seen many others here on the forums recommend it. I messed with something else a few years ago to connect to my Raspberry Pi. I think it was xtightvnc, but I could be remembering wrong.

Like I mentioned, it didn't install. Some of the missing packages were not found by synaptic.

At least "qtdeclarative5-controls-plugin" seems to be missing from search results of "qtdeclarative5".

Aha. With apt TeamViewer host installs...
But the client(?) (teamviewer_13.2.13582_amd64.deb) didn't. The error log didn't fit the terminal buffer, not even close...
...
Looks like gdebi could install the client...

Teamviewer seems to work partially. I can connect and log in with my credentials, but not with my moms... not even locally.
Somehow TW seems to have broken my mom's account...

Like I mentioned, it didn't install.
Oops, I missed that. Maybe I will try it in the next day or two. I have been using it in Mint 17.x and 18.x, and I'm planning to move to Mint 19 soon, so I guess I'm going to have to figure it out sooner or later.

Funny, that dpkg couldn't install either of the package.
Apt could install the host, but not the full program, but gdebi could install the full program.

Also weird that I can log in remotely with my credentials, but with my moms credentials there is no way to log in anymore, not even locally.
