Is there a way for me to remap the key of a windows keyboard, so that it functions like a mac keyboard i.e. ALT key is Command and so on?

sure, a lot of re-mapping can be done via the GUI Keyboard tool already, such as the one you asked about (at least on my MATE desktop), you can remap individual keys via xmodmap and you can even create a fully custom layout: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Custo ... efinitions
